hi, im starting my first ortho rotations in june and have 3 after, i was wondeirng what are some good ortho books to get so i dont look like a fool during rotations, also cuz i wanna learn this stuff too

hey DO... i don't know any good books, but i wanted to just wish you good luck man! also, if you have a pda there is an "ortho 5mcc" that i saw on skyscape.com when buying the general 5mcc- i don't know how useful it is, but it may be worth looking at. where did you decide to do your rotations anyway, just curious

don't worry about ortho 5mcc. It is not the most helpful. What you need is a good fracture pocketbook, Handbook of Fractures is by far the most used. An anatomy book, netters orthopaedic anatomy is a great pocket book, but any will do. After those, hoppenfelds physical exam of the spine an extremeties and orthopaedic surgical exposures are great books, but will probably be available in the library.

Make sure to know your ortho anatomy cold before all the cases. Like the previous poster stated, Netter's anatomy, esp. the ortho one, is key. Hoppenfeld's musculoskeletal exam book is good as well. If you have more time, there is an older book called essentials of orthopedics that is a good read for beginners (only bad part is there are no new editions...the only one is from 97). Know those books and you will be fine.

MANDATORY READING:

Netter's Concise Atlas of Orthopaedic Anatomy
-No one cares if you know what the steps are in an arthoscopic repair of a torn cuff, what they do care about is that when they say "What's this?" you know what the answer is. I repeat, YOU MUST KNOW YOUR ANATOMY. Everything else is secondary.

SECONDARY READING:

I really liked Essentials of Orthopaedic Surgery by Wiesel. It pretty much covers everything, but very superficially. Don't waste your time with Miller or any of the books made for residents; you do not need to be at that level.

Oh, and in case you ever get pimped about it, the eighteen muscles that attach to the scapula are:

Cuff (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, subscapularis), teres major, rhomboid major, rhomboid minor, latissimus dorsi, levator scapulae, trapezius, biceps brachii long, biceps brachii short, corocobrachialis, deltoid, pec minor, triceps (long), serratus anterior, and the one everyone misses....the omohyoid.​

F-CUK?? Are you talking about French Connection UK? I think the Secrets series is a good set of books. I am only going into lowly general surgery, but I did a plastics/hand surgery rotation and secrets had everything you would want as a student, resident, and fellow. They had all the obscure anatomy you needed as well as the rational for each procedure, it's history and alternatives for treatment. You should check out ortho secrets. It might be everything you are looking for. It is pretty cheap as well, 30-40 dollars. I have no idea about DO ortho, as I'm allo. Your 4 away rotations should help you. When you are doing aways, it is basically a 28 day job interview, so you really need to be on the ball. Work your ass off, read with all of your freetime and try not to burn out. 4 back to back is grueling. I did 4 surgical subIs and I did burn out towards the end. Luckily my last one was in Hawaii.
I wouldn't schedule your top choices as your first or last subIs as these might not be where you are at your best. On the other hand I've heard ortho rotations are chiller then gensurg subIs.

Now back to the hatin! How many orthopods does it take to screw in a light bulb? Two, one to recognize that the bulb is burnt out who then refers it to an orthopod who only screws in light bulbs and does nothing else.

What do you call ortho microsurgical scissors? Suture scissors.

What is an orthopods idea of floor management? Moonlighting in a casino in Vegas.

Hello everyone. You may seen this post on other forums. If so, I apologize. I am trying to reach someone who can help me out. I am currently a first year at VCOM (the new osteopathic school). If there is anyone reading this that has experience with military ortho surgery, please help. Everyone tells me that it is next to impossible to score the AF ortho residency at Lackland because of an average of approximately 4 open spots per year. Is this true? What are the types of things that I should be doing now (besides studying for Step 1) to make myself more competitive? People also tell me that I need to show my face and establish contacts at the residency. How is this possible with just one residency location? I plan doing an ADT at Keesler this summer, but I don't think I will meet any connections during that time. Please help....

I would recommend ortho research, followed by an ADT at the Airforce ortho residency early in your 4th year. Bust your ass for this ADT and they might like you enough to let you in. I'm not sure how the air force works with GMOs getting seniority for residency. You may want to check that out as all three branches are different.
