Hello everyone,

just decided to start a thread about ortho 2011 admission cycle, so this thread is meant to discuss application process (including questions, doubts, LOR, PASS ...etc), interviews, and admission

i know it is too early but it will keep us focused in one thread and make it easier to track our applications by sharing information (and as a result, reduce number of "how/what to.." threads  )

first i will post some helpful links:
Ortho 2010
ORTHO Match Results 2010
*Ortho interviews 2008*
2008 Ortho Match
*Ortho interviews 2007*
*Ortho 2006 interviews*

other informative threads:
What does it take to get into ortho?
Interview info-Ortho
ortho interview questions

i will start with myself, i have just completed submission of applications to 20+ ortho programs and following schools' emails

i was shocked with a fast response from UW rejecting my application, i expect such response but not too quickly

so what about you guys, lets share experiences so that we benefit each other

good piece of information!
Did you apply to nyu?
How did you report your national boards /toefl scores to NYU?
Their site says send only application fee and photos while everything else should be reported through pass.

yes and i think i followed what they asked for, so how many programs did you apply to?

I was wondering how that old school thread of mine bumped its way back up to the top.
since you put time and effort to contribute to forums, your informative thread will stay forever :)

I have a question about UCLA- since its not a "match" school, when do they tell you about acceptances? Do they tell you if you got in before you have to rank the other schools?

what they said you have to apply early since processing of foreign applications takes longer time, but most of nonmatch programs announce their offers in October and some requested you to withdraw from match to confirm your approval on their offer

Hey!
I am applying to 14 places this year-and one of them is the Washington Hospital Center. I am applying there because my husband loves D.C., but does anyone know anything about the program? Pros? Cons? I have information about most of the other schools that I am applying, but not Washington. Thanks!!

Also if anyone knows any of the residents at your school- can you ask for interview dates and then post them???

Good Luck everyone!!!!!

Submitted 11 PASS applications yesterday!!! One non-pass done, three to go!

Maryland was really nice and emailed a confirmation of my application (saying it was complete) about two hours after I submitted.

Now we wait for interviews. Good luck everyone on applications!!

ya, me too, they are quick in responding to application submission

Does anyone know anything about UOP and USC ortho?
What the program is like etc?

i visited UOP, it is a great program
they have a strong clinical experience with a 2yrs program (3 plus MS) and their chair, Dr. Boyd, is doing his research on Invisalign
the clinics equipped with state of the art facilities (e.g. cone beam CT) and their residents finish about 50 cases/year from scratch plus referred cases
they have special emphasis on craniofacial anomalies and they routinely arrange for visits to developing countries to carry out cleft lip/palate surgeries plus dental treatments
and finally, the program director, Dr. Cho, is a great person and the enviroment overall in this program is friendly and supportive in case you have some life issues
simply, it is my 1st choice =)

ok lets share some of the programs pros/cons to keep the discussion up and kill the waiting

today i chose Case school or CWRU:

a great program with a strong clinical training. They are using cone beam CT. What i really liked about the program is that they dedicate seperate clinics for teens, adults, and craniofacial anomalies in addition to the surgical cases. So by the time you graduate you must have treated a considerable number of cases of each type. You can notice a friendly atmosphere between faculty, residents, and staff. Many of international students are enrolled. Their internship is mostly of "observership" without touching patients. In general, a great program =) what do you think guys, any pros/cons?

USCF ortho program is ridiculous. The admissions director is rude and their requirements are bogus. If you went to a study abroad program for 3 months back in college, they make you pay $500 to get a course by course evaluation and they need a copy of the official transcripts from the abroad institution. You would think that they could just accept that it was a sponsored program through your undergrad university ( no credit or grades received), but they wont budge. Usually, these service programs are used for foreign applicants and shouldn't be needed for study abroad programs offered through a US institution! The admissions director even told me that last year a girl couldn't apply and needed to reapply this year b/c she was missing this silly course by course eval for her study abroad! Omg Im so furious. Sorry guys, I just had to let it out somewhere!! I wish i didn't waste my money on this school.. after so many years of work, i can't even apply b/c in the past...I decided to go abroad in college!

i contacted UCSF director for a visit and he agreed, one week before i confirmed my arrival by email without response

when i arrived at program he was not there, they tried to contact him but they could not i left my email at front desk, and sent him an email but he did not contact me yet

provided that i traveled for 16 hrs to meet him!

yes and i think i followed what they asked for, so how many programs did you apply to?
just finished applying to 4 programs.
Do you guys register for the match at this stage or one can do it before the match deadline too? What would be the appropriate time?thanks!

i already registered, but you can check the deadline for match, you dont want to miss it unless you are waiting for nonmatch offers

it pays you a fat stipend, and it's in DC. enough said!

according to posts in last 3 years, invitations are sent from now on (late Aug.) till early Oct.
Has any one received any invite/rejection?

Do we need to send transcripts and NBDE score report directly to each department as supplemental documents? Or we may include the official reports in our suppl application package to send out by ourselves? I'm afraid that the ortho- programs might not be able to track single item that directly sent to them, which may cause application incomplete and delay materials review.
Another question is, do the programs receive copies instead of official reports? ... Trying to save some money :p

Another question, how we know whether our application is received and considered to be complete? Will the programs notify us by email? or we need to email the contact person in each program directly to make sure? Thanks!

1- most of programs require items to be sent directly from institutions, so just type whatever address they provided to you and it is their business to receive it
2- copies? i doubt, may be some programs and they will state this clearly
3- some notify you of completion of your application, others you have to email/call

Thank you Ninety.
Do you think the sealed score reports might work - considered to be official?

Thank you Ninety.
Do you think the sealed score reports might work - considered to be official?

programs that ask for official score reports will only take official score reports. true story.

in all seriousness i know applying is $$$$ and a pain in the butt to follow all the directions, but you chose this route and you gotta do what you gotta do. trust me you don't want to cut corners during the application cycle bc that could lead to an even bigger waste of money in the end. give the programs what they ask for :)

So update on interviews none of this is confirmed so read carefully-

Oklahoma has already started calling people apparently- have two dates to pick from- friend of a friend got a call last week- dont know dates

Houston- interviews are Oct 14th-15th- no invites out yet

Baylor- Oct 25-27th dates tentative

ANyone else know any dates yet?

A couple students from my school got interviews at UIC (Illinois) via email yesterday... anyone hear of any other schools that have sent out interviews?

Oklahoma: October 22nd and Nov 3rd are then dates that I have heard...

I second the UIC interview...dates to choose from are 10/05; 10/06, 10/12; 10/13; 10/26; 10/27; 11/02; and 11/03.

Hey Ninety you seem to be a knowledgeable guy. Could you tell me please what should I do about the match else than registration at PASS website and paying 80 U,D fee.?
per say; should I send to each college and school I am applying to whether through the PASS or not my Match Code ?
I asked about it and PASS representatives told me there is no need they will look at it while looking at your PASS application.

Iowa sent out interviews: sept. 16-17th and oct 14th-15th

I guess if we haven't heard from Iowa by now its a no?? :(
Do schools usually send out rejection letters?

I applied to 20 schools. Haven't heard from any of them yet~

And thanks for all the helpful info Ninety!
good luck everyone! :)

i am in the same situation, i have not applied to iowa so i am not sad but i did to UIC :(

anyway, it is still early, if you you check the last year invitations you would know that most of invites are sent in late (after 20th) Sep. and early Oct.

so lets just wait :scared:

hey guys if you dont mind me asking--what was your class rank and board scores?
thanks,
TM

Hey Ninety: I applied to UIC too. Did they already send out rejection letters? You had a frown face... Did they already send out invites for interviews?

I wish I would have found this site earlier. I applied to 20 programs and everyone said that was too many. Now I worry that was not enough. Scary

I have a friend who got rejection letters months after the match date (even though they matched somewhere).

yeah, someone already posted an invite from UIC, but i did not hear anything from them (not even a rejection!)

Do you have a backup plan other than ortho? like a DDS or GPR. I am asking because I know of foreign applicants who thought the process was fair before they figure out that connections was more important than anything else in ortho world.

unfortunately, no. I have just started to think about any back up plan! i know that connections are important in admission but i have nothing to do!

lets wait and see

Hey All,

Don't freak out right now at all, it is still way too early like someone said earlier. Interviews will roll in, they just take a matter of time. Also, if you don't hear a rejection yet, then don't worry too much at this time. It doesn't mean that you're not going to be invited by any means.

Never let the hope die.

It's never too late to add a couple of applications for DDS. Ortho match is no fun for highly ranked US grads, let alone FTD's. The lucky FTD's I met fell into one of three categories:

1- Foreign trained specialists who are active in research with very positive letters of recommendation from their program directors overseas who happened to be alumni of the program they matched into (with very good to excellent Part 1 + GRE)

2-FTD's who somehow made their way to the ortho department through a volunteer or research fellow position at the school they matched into. (also with excellent Part 1 and GRE)

3- FTD's who are not ranked high in DS and did not write Part 1 nor GRE and have no postgrad experience or research. I know 3 of these who applied to ONE program each, Interviewed at ONE program each and matched to their number ONE!

Anyone of the above knew exactly where they were going to be accepted beforehand. Interesting!

Good luck.

waiting is no fun! haha but thanks i will post a message if i hear from any of the schools!
let's keep our fingers crossed :)

one more invite, for a friend:

invite via phone on 9/8 for Mayo clinic. Interview dates that were offered were 10/22, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8.

I got the invitation this afternoon from UIC. The interview choices : 10/27. 11/2, 11/3

Mayo called for an interview. :xf: Does anybody know how many people they interview for one spot? They offered several different dates to choose from. wondering if they interview one person each date?

the confirmed list so far:
Illinois: 9/6 and 9, email, dates 10/05; 10/06, 10/12; 10/13; 10/26; 10/27; 11/02; and 11/03.

Iowa: 9/6, email, dates: sept. 16-17th and oct 14th-15th

Mayo clinic: 9/8, phone, dates 10/22, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8.

note: please mention how you received the invite (email or phone) and when you received it
