if you dont waive your right to see your letters of recommendation, ERAS says that you are supposed to send a copy of the letter, and save the original.

What's the point of saving the original?

Do you need to submit the original copies to the residency program that you eventually match into? Or is ERAS just telling to save the original letters JUST in case you have to scramble for a residency position?

I doubt the program will want the original letters, since most of us don't have the original letters (since we waived the right to see them). Besides, why would they want it once you've matched there?

BTW, you really should waive your right to see it. It's ridiculous that they ask us to sign such a thing, but apparently it looks bad if you don't waive. It's entirely possible your letter writers will give you a copy of the letter anyway. If I wrote a nice letter on someone's behalf, I'd want him/ her to see it!
