Ont. spends $26M on foreign-trained MDs

The number of foreign-trained doctors who will be able to practise in Ontario each year will double as a result of $26 million in new funding, Health Minister George Smitherman announced today.
Smitherman said the funding will increase the number of training positions for graduates of foreign medical schools to 200 a year at IMG Ontario, a new assessment, training and placement centre for international medical school graduates.

"This program removes the roadblocks that stand in the way of (IMG graduates) and their chosen profession," said Smitherman.

"So that they can apply their vital skills in Ontario."

The Association of International Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario applauded the creation of IMG Ontario, saying it will mean more opportunities for doctors educated in other countries to practise in the province.

"The establishment of IMG Ontario represents a significant step toward creating more opportunities for internationally trained physicians to integrate into the health-care system," said Dr. Uday Shankardass, president of the association.

Smitherman said the funding will also pay for a program to fast-track the assessment and registration of foreign-trained doctors who are already practising medicine in other provinces so they can work in Ontario.

The Ministry of Health has designated 134 Ontario communities as underserviced and in need of family doctors.

"Ontario needs more doctors, and international medical graduates represent a major, untapped opportunity to bring more physicians to communities that need them," said Smitherman.

This is a direct consequence of Canada's draconian single payer healthcare system.

they have PLENTY of homegrown medical students. The problem is two-fold:

1) Many doctors leave Canada to practice in the United States because the pay is MUCH better

2) Canadian government caps doctors earnings. For FPs, its about 80k Canadian ($65k US dollars). That gives doctors a HUGE incentive to max their income and then STOP seeing new patients. As a result, nobody can find a doctor.

Thanks for the post Choda! It is encouraging but interpret this with caution. The positions are broken down in the following way:

50 are direct entry in the last year of medical school (clerkship)
25 are direct entry into PGY1 residencies across a variety of specialties that you will not be permitted to subspecialize in
75 are advanced level post graduate training positions
50 are specialist assessment positions

If the cap for FPs was 80k I'd suspect no one would go into it...the cap is actually much higher, somewhere on the order of 350-400k.
