Hello everybody! I’m so fortunate to have been accepted and have choices this year! (2nd time applicant). Now, I know that school should be chosen almost entirely based upon financials. However, Ohio offers instate tuition after year 1. Having that said, it’s still quite expensive because of year one. You end up with a DVM regardless, but tOSU has a lot more amenities, ease of networking, great program, other small things I consider “perks”. There are current concerns I have with OK…. Should I even consider this while deciding? Or truly just stick with cheapest option? Thank you so much for opinions.

It’s like $80,000 more at Ohio, correct? That’s what the VIN map shows. I live in Oklahoma and as a veterinarian in the state I am frustrated by the lack of specialists at the vet school. It concerns me that they have almost no small animal specialists on staff anymore. However, other institutions have shown a distributive model works fine (not that OSU is a fully distributive model, but my understanding is people are doing a lot more away rotations than they used to). They get evaluated by the AVMA COE this year so that’ll be interesting to see results of, though that will be after acceptance decisions are made for the upcoming year. With all that said, if you’re in-state at OkState, I don’t think it’s worth going 80k or more further into debt to go to Ohio. Amenities don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things, you’ll still end up a licensed vet in the end. 80k more is a LOT of money especially when you consider accumulated interest.

Hey there! I work for OK State. We have a small animal internist starting in June, recently hired an anesthesiologist, and have some surgeons coming in soon-ish. We have also interviewed several more specialists that we hope will join us, too.

That’s excellent news. I’m glad to hear that more there are more people on the way. Clinical years are a ways ahead of me so I’m sure it will be different by the then. Thank you!
