I've been waiting on ONE LETTER FOR OVER A MONTH before I can submit. Ugh.

haha im sure many of us know your pain. you can still submit your PASS app even if not all the rec letters are in yet. they will just be added once your evaluator completes it.

I don't think not getting an interview right now means that you will not get one later. Let's just be patient, we all feel the pain!

Is 4 year more competitive than 6 year?

In my opinion, and based on what I have heard, 6 year programs usually ask for a higher CBSE score cause they want to make sure their residents are able to pass the USMLE. But there are no stats on CBSE scores around so.....

I'm 0 for 5 right now. I got rejected from michigan, case, emory, Knoxville and vcu. I only applied to 20 programs.

I am ranked 2 out of 70 and got a 75 on my cbse as well as 6 weeks of externships. I go to a west coast school where not many students specialize. People I talked to said that I would have no problems getting interviews.

I'm starting to get pretty paranoid. Does this still seem pretty normal/plausible or is it likely that i have a red flag in my app? I should've applied to more schools. Pretty depressing since all I can think of is what more could I possibly have done for them to even consider giving me an interview.

Did VCU sent out rejection letters, or did you not get an email at all? That's really weird that you haven't gotten any interviews with those stats.

This doesn't make any sense man !! Number wise your application is spot on. Maybe it's your LORs? Did you extern at any of the programs you mentioned?

I just didn't get an e-mail. Emory sent out a rejection e-mail.

It could possibly be a LOR. I can't see a reason why a faculty would write me a negative LOR though. However, that's the only unknown I have on my application. I didn't extern at any of these programs. Maybe it's a bad luck streak or these programs greatly value people who have externed there?

Just really curious. Who are these people that you have talked to? And, what was your GPA?

Residents where I've externed at said that I'd get interviews. GPA doesn't matter from what I'm aware of, unless you mean undergrad for 6 years, which was a 3.5. I was hoping my solid CBSE score would overcome my average/below-average undergrad gpa.

Anyways, sorry for derailing the thread. You know how it is... checking SDN every 30 minutes even though most invites don't even come out until October. Hopefully I've just started out with some bad luck. Rushing to add some more programs that are at the Oct 3 and 15 deadline though lol.

Yea I got the rejection email yesterday. :( The first rejection hurts the most.

There's also those with deadlines in Dec :)

If you look at their website, it seems like all the residents are not from the west coast (undergrad/dental school)

You got a rejection e-mail? I didn't get one yet... Does that mean they do rolling invites or maybe they didn't even review my app lol. I did send the 2x2 photo they requested but they never confirmed that my pass application was submitted.

btw, if I get matched, I am definitely taking a trip to japan for some sushi at jiro's. maybe his son's place though lol.

Maybe my app didnt even get looked at and just went straight to the reject list.

Michigan sends out multiple rounds of interviews so don't lose hope on that unless you got a rejection letter/email.

This is VERY early in the cycle, be careful and if possible apply to more programs with later deadlines if you really want to.

I am right now 0/5 (including a place where I externed and did really well). 1 place sent me a rejection email, while the other 4 sent out interviews but I didn't get one... Yet at least. The place that I externed at is interviewing people with worse stats who didn't extern there, and some people who aren't considering their program highly - but this is inherent to this application process. Nothing new or worth getting worked up over.

I applied to 28 programs. 75 cbse, strong LORs (2 omfs, 1 maxfacs prosthodontics, 1 oral path) and a very strong CV, lots of awards, good story and lots of documented desire to pursue academics. My school dean letter aside, I know my application checks all the right boxes, but I'm in the same boat as you. When I heard about the school I externed at, I was worried about an imaginary red flag too, chances are we just don't appeal to some of these programs and who really knows what rubs certain people the wrong way? Chances are also very good that some of these programs are rushing to hog the "good" applicants, not knowing if people are even willing to accept the location and/or are considering their program highly.

If a month from now we are 0/15 then it's time to start panicking. Till then, we just gotta buck up keep positive and work away at those graduation requirements or do something productive with our lives. Omfs is great and we will all make it in the end :) I'm going to remain hopeful until I have reason to think otherwise.

Congrats on getting interviews! This is an exciting/terrifying time so enjoy it if you can, but don't forget about school!

Just as an aside, do not panic if you are 0/5 or something like that. It seems that these things come in waves. I remember one week getting a handful of interviews followed by another bout of silence followed by another handful here and there. Really, the footwork is in, so just grab a beer or drink of your choice and relax a little if you can. You will need your energy for when it comes time to interview!

As another aside - I have the unique experience of seeing externs on the other side of the fence now. It really is funny what will rub one person the wrong way and totally not bother someone else. Take home point - do not take it personally if you do not interview somewhere you externed. Its more like the roll of a dice than anything.

Anyway, just wanted to answer a few questions I saw here. :)

Just wanted to let you all know that VCU has only sent invites to people who have externed at VCU. People who did not extern at VCU will be getting interview invites as soon as the OMFS faculty have reviewed all the applications.

I hear that interview date swaps between SDN members are a thing. How do these work? What is the etiquette?

Is there any advise to give a good impression as an extern? Thank you for your input!

Not trying to be rude at all but this thread is for interviews so this is a little out of topic. I would suggest searching for existing threads, starting a new one or sending direct messages to people who have externed. I think you will get a lot more feedback that way! Good luck!

I'm curious if anyone know if most program send out batch invites? also do program send out like all their invite spots in the first round and if people decline later on, then the second batch is send out to whatever number is needed to fill up the spots.

Alright, throwing it out there: I have Case and Vanderbilt 6 yr interviews both on the 28, 29 of Oct. I would love to trade with someone so I can get the earlier Case interview (Sept 30, Oct 1). Help a sista out?

I feel the same exact way. I am a military applicant (full-ride scholarship) with a 4.0 UG GPA and a solid Dental School (UNC-CH) GPA. I got a 75 on my CBSE and have completed my GPR in the military. I was denied from VCU and have not heard from any other places! I definitely did not expect that!!! Hang in there!
