Official Harvard Extension 2012 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are you currently in MA? I had a hard time last year as well when I was trying to line up a place from out of state. I got to Cambridge on August 17 and found a place within 3 days. It was really hard to find a place even when I was in town. And it was VERY stressful omg. The place I ended up signing was way out of my original price range. You have to be extremely diligent at checking CL, sending emails, and making calls. Try to expand your search criteria and cast a wide net, and only look at ads that were posted within the last 24 hours. Anything posted before that has already been signed 99% of the time.
Also call a bunch of agents that you see on CL and tell them that you're a motivated renter for 9/1. Most of them won't have anything but there's always a chance that they will come across something.
Be ready to sign. The place I rented was listed on CL at 11:00 am, I saw it at 12:00 and committed to it, because another person was coming to see it at 12:30. It's an aggressive market. Good luck!

Thanks for the info! I'm still in London at the moment but will be in Boston by next Monday. Hopefully I'll be able to figure something out when I'm there. If not then my backup plan it just to sign a sublet/short term and keep looking during term time.

Are chem labs held every week or just a few times over the semester like bio?

Hello all. I'm new to the forum and was hoping to get some advice. I am strongly considering the HES (I know - I'm late in the game but this was my plan B after plan A didn't work out) for this fall. I am thinking of taking Orgo and Human Pathophys II. Is that an okay combo? Would it be ill-advised if I took another class with those two?
Thanks for the help in advice.

[Thinking of all the stuff I will have to do within the next week doesn't seem too fun - looking for housing, getting a loan, registering for classes, buying books (are books needed for the above two courses btw?), moving my things...:scared: :(]

Does anyone know any good libraries with study rooms that I could potentially do my viva in?

Go back through the last few pages of the thread. Jennet went through all of the libraries in detail.

I don't think they offer level two classes in the fall. Taking another class would depend on your own ability.

It is pretty simple - once you come in for your interview, tell whomever you are with that you want an ED spot first and foremost. They will try and get you into patient transport - say no. Then the staff member will look at available times and tell you when you can work. Viola! I know you'll be fine with ED. MGH recently sent an email desperately needing volunteers for the ED on Mondays. Weekends are harder to find a spot, just a warning.

Had my interview today, no spots open for the ED :(. Oh well, I'm still TBA maybe something will pop up.

For what it's worth, I have a couple of different volunteer shifts at MGH, both in the ED and in patient transport, and I enjoy the patient transport one MUCH more than the ED. With the amount of staff in the ED and the volunteers' lack of medical training, there really isn't much that we do there... Bring an occasional pillow/blanket to a waiting patient and distribute lunch/dinner if you happen to be there during those hours. I find that I get significantly much more patient contact during my transport shift since I get to go to pretty much every unit in the hospital and interact with patients directly, and it's a lot busier and more rewarding, whereas in ED I end up just walking around bored to tears. Just my two cents... I wouldn't dismiss other volunteer opportunities entirely.

I've been considering picking up a PT or book cart shift. Seems like you'd recommend the former.

I haven't done book cart so I can't comment on it, but I love my patient transport shift. It has its down times too, but once the summer is over and all the high school kids from the summer junior volunteer program are gone, things should be back to normal. If you are like me and prefer being on the go most of the shift, I'd definitely recommend it. Plus the patients seem to really appreciate you and almost everyone is always super nice and friendly.

By the way, I'm only referring to patient escort in the Main Lobby (which covers the entire hospital, including all of the surrounding buildings and Mass Eye and Ear). Yawkey Lobby might be a little different.

Really? I love my ED shift! I am always busy no matter what. I go to imaging, talk to the nurses there ask them if they need anything, run errands at post-screening, go to peds and get toys for children in the waiting room. There are numerous tasks that need completing and I always feel useful. I'm going to try that donut trick in a few weeks and hope that I keep improving my relationship with the staff in Acute and Fast Track. One shift I was taken by an anesthesiologist to the cardiac ICU where we walked around discussing diagnoses. It was awesome.

Maybe it depends on the time of the day/day of the week for each shift, I don't know. I do weekday mornings and it's quite slow. Also, I guess the main difference between the two is that in the ED, like you described, you mostly get to interact with the staff, whereas I really prefer just working directly with and being useful to patients instead.

I have my interview coming up at mgh for volunteering. I put my top two choices for the two ED spots but I'm gonna take whatever is available. Well probably not the museum gig.

Ya, I'd turn down the museum. It isn't a part of the hospital and you don't really interact with patients, just tourists. It is a fascinating little thing, gorgeous building. I'd recommend going to see it but not to volunteer in it.

About 1.5 weeks until school!

I looked online at the courses they are offering. It appears they are offering Human Pathophys II in the fall.

Apologies for bringing this up again. I know it was mentioned before but I can't seem to find it.

For those who have taken physics, do you recommend purchasing the Student Solutions Manual along with it?

It's half the price of the textbook itself so I only want to purchase it if it gives you a serious advantage in the class.

Is the back to school BBQ I read about a while back happening? I didn't find any information about a date or time, but hope I can make it! I love kickball and want to meet some classmates who will be sharing in the torture that is physics and chemistry.

Does anyone of any sports bars that have a lot of TVs that show different sporting events? I'm looking to watch the hawaii vs usc college football game next saturday. it's gonna be on FOX at 4:30 pacific i believe. If any of you guys know places that show a lot of sporting events can you tell me where? i would like to call them up to see if they are playing the game. :D

I found the bar below and it shows all NCAA football games. I should be there next Saturday to watch the Oregon Ducks game (against Arkansas State), so if you want to join later in the evening that would be fun! Anyway, if nothing else, you now know a sports bar in the area!

This is exactly what I've been looking for. Thanks. I just might be there. I'll probably be the only guy there in a hawaii shirt still watching/cheering for the hawaii usc game when the game is a blow out.

Awesome! Excited to actually meet people on the course!

Also if anyone has or knows of a room available for rent in Cambridge, please let me know! STILL having a hard time getting responses.

I had a pretty hard time trying to find a place in Cambridge too but ended up signing a lease for an apt. in Somerville (Davis Square) that I found through Craigslist. You might have better luck in Somerville or other areas. Will let you know if I hear of an open room somewhere though!

Agreed, I was able to find my place last minute from Craigslist also near Davis Square. Not to mention Cambridge is alot more pricey rent wise. Try Somerville, as well as Brighton, and some of the Squares(Davis/Porter/Inman). Hope that helps!

Anatomy and Physiology question: is the textbook required?

Last week of freedom, get ready kiddos.

how does one properly represent the HCP on one's resume?

the only example resume I could find was this one

Harvard University Extension School • Cambridge, MA • January 2011 - May 2013 (Expected)
Harvard University Health Careers program: Diploma in Premedical Studies Candidate

That's fine, or you can split your coursework into "undergraduate coursework" and "post-baccalaureate coursework"

thanks! that was fast :) ps i can't believe how expensive the physics/chem books were at the coop today! i need to start stripping for extra cash

Physics will be useful (though you probably could find a cheaper deal online). From my experience, however, buying the chem textbook at the coop is a huge waste. I stopped reading the chapters after the first 2-3 lectures as everything that we needed to do problem sets and prepare for exams was covered in lecture and Friday review. I kept my copy for the occasional use of tables referenced in some problem sets; granted I bought an older edition for like $8, which was pretty much identical to the current version. Just FYI..

Has anyone tried buying a used clicker online? They are $40 at the coop. I had 6-7 years ago and I think I paid $15 for it then.

I'm selling my clicker, excellent condition $20. It still has the original box which I kept it in all semester. PM me if interested.

I'm 100% sure we don't need these for Orgo or Bio. Can someone confirm?

Since bio prof is new this year, it still up the the air? If your syllabus doesn't say so I'd assume no.

Wow I was actually able to sign up for an Orientation time at MGH thanks to the advice of people on here.

Whew. Thanks!

Nice, as Jennet said, I think, they really try and push you hard on patient escort. Unfortunately for me there was no room in the ED, and I couldn't volunteer in the same department I research for. So I kind of got stuck with patient escort. Oh well, only three months of it though.

What don't you like about patient escort?

I volunteered in the oncology unit before and it was hard not to get down. I think I'll like ED or patient escort better.

I find it a bit dull, I've been in an ED before and found that to be much more interesting. I don't now thought I've only done it twice now, so we'll see.

Is anyone going to the BBQ tomorrow hosted by HEPS tomorrow? If you are see you there!

For those of you taking physics, it looks like I'll be leading a Tuesday 4-5pm discussion section.

More details to follow.

Anyone going to be at Spirit Bar tonight watching any games? I might be there later and would love to grab a drink.

I was thinking about going there, sounds like an awesome place but I decided to stay home and stream the game online instead. Hawaii USC game starting in 15 baby!!!!!

by the way your starting qb for the ducks is a freshman from hawaii right? mariota, you'll hear the name during the game. he went to the high school right across the street from where i live.

Yep, same guy. That's awesome, and I am excited to see how he does tonight. He is pretty young right? I'll be meeting some friends at Spirit
Bar at 830 and can let you know what it's like. And I hope Hawaii stomps USC :)
