*****Official General Surgery Interview Invite/Rejection Thread 2012-2013*****

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It looks like surgery is pretty competitive this year, I've interviewed at 2 community programs thus far and most of the applicants interviewing with me have been from well respected and top US medical schools. This hints to me that even smaller programs have no shortage of well qualified applicants and that this is probably a buyers market.

It's been that way for multiple years....no recent changes in the applicant profiles. On my personal interview trail in 2005, I only saw one Caribbean applicant, and it was at Mayo. DOs and FMGs were also few and far between, and I interviewed at several community programs (?5).

Does anyone know if Univ of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital is univ-affiliated community hospital or U of Miami's main university program?

Jackson is the main program, and it is based out of the main county facility for Miami-Dade County, which is Jackson Memorial Hospital. There is no real "main university program." The University of Miami Hospital is a relatively new entity, which came from the purchase of another hospital near the Jackson Campus. Historically, the main practice location of UM physicians has been Jackson. Many specialties will rotate through UM hospital, the Miami VA, and occasionally other local hospitals as well. I know the surgery residents used to go to Mt. Sinai on the beach and Hollywood Memorial Hospital as well, though I think those rotations may have gone away.

Good to know and yes, I haven't seen a DO or FMG yet, but as I mentioned before, I've only been on 2 interviews and I have quite a few more scheduled with a good mix of academic and community so ill report back around the end of January.

On another note, I know you were at u of Kansas wichita, and not the Kansas city program. Nevertheless, I've been meaning to ask you if you can shed some light on the university of Kansas, Kansas city program? I will be interviewing there this season.

Just my own stats: I am a DO, and only applied to categorical programs in NYC area and have interviews at Cornell, Einstein, Maimo, NYHQ, etc.

It's smaller than the Wichita program, and is straight university (vs. U-affiliated). It incorporates several outside rotations which I believe are rural. The program was on probation when I interviewed in 2005, but did a good job of addressing the citations and is now off probation (I think). The program director, Dr. Schropp, is a pretty awesome guy, and is well-liked. They have pretty decent fellowship placements. I've been told the vascular experience is weak, but I know nothing of the CT experience.

Thank you for the explanation. So since there is no main univ program at Miami Univ, is Jackson technically university affiliated university hospital even though there is no univ program there?

Does anyone know about when interview invitations stop rolling in? I know it is probably different for every school every year, but at what point in time should I lower my expectation for hearing from additional programs?

From reading an old interview thread, I think the concensus is mid November.

Any thoughts on if the game is going to change in the northeast because of Sandy?

Well I'm merely a lowly Med student speculating, but I'd imagine that some of the NY programs may have to reschedule some interviews, otherwise I don't think it will have any other impact.

Johns Hopkins sent 2nd round draft pick dates today (10/30):

I was thinking more along the lines of office staff not making it into work for a day or two due to power outages/flooding resulting in invites being delayed a few days.

Oh yes haha, Good point, that's definitely a possibility.

No inside knowledge, but I kind of wonder if this timeframe will change now that the Dean's letters are released a month earlier.

When I applied, it seemed like most of the November invites were from programs waiting to see the Dean's letters...without that imposed wait until Nov 1st I would assume these programs would finish screening sooner.

Southern IM, long time no see! What year are you in now?

Yeah you would think, but I just got an email from UMass informing all applicants to be patient and that they have yet to review all applications.

From my reading of old threads it seems like November is when most invites go out, and you can see them as late as December... I'm hoping this is the case, as I'm only about halfway to my magic # of 20 invites... I'm checking my email incessantly lol :scared:

Congrats on your NY interviews! Do you have the interview dates that Maimonides offered and when did you get the offer? Curious because I didn't see anything posted on the master list of dates.

Thanks!

Maimo sent them like three weeks ago. The dates are Dec 14 and I think Jan 6 and another date in Jan.

Congrats on your NY interviews! Do you have the interview dates that Maimonides offered and when did you get the offer? Curious because I didn't see anything posted on the master list of dates.

Thanks!

I got this message yesterday from NYCHHC but not NYU. did you also get one from NYU?

Also, does anyone know if it's possible to "swap" interview dates with another interviewee and if so how you go about doing that?

oops my fault thought it was nyu :)

btw would anyone want to swap interview dates with me a suny downstate? would like to interview 12/6 and have 12/20 - please pm me if interested

NYU got hit pretty hard by the storm and several of their hospitals are shut down for the month with the VA down for up to 6. Some of the departments are sending their residents elsewhere so they can graduate. I dunno wut is going to happen with their interview season this year.

Still have not heard from 15 school yet. Does anyone know if it is common practice for schools to just leave the applicants in limbo or if they will respond at some point. Thanks
