Hey. I know this question has been asked a million times, but I've spent the last 30ish minutes searching old threads/posts but to no avail. Can people post how their real scores compared to the scores they were getting on Achiever? Yes, I know it's meant to be harder than test day etc, but no one actually mentions how much of a difference it was. Thanks! =)

Thanks OD2015. I actually went through that thread as well but since the real OAT has been re-calibrated since 2008 (the last post from that thread) I was looking for newer updates. I was told by an admission person that comparing the old calibration with the new one can't be done. Supposedly, Achiever is updated each year as well. Thanks for searching though!!

Anyone else willing to share?

wow, didn't know it was re-calibrated. thanks for the update then.

good luck with your search.

i think the OAT Achiever is excellent
i did the first practice test today and it really exposed my weaknesses
i was doing the Kaplan practice tests and on the RC portion, I kept getting like 390 and 400, so I was under the impression that the RC was going to be easy. Then I took the OAT Achiever and I got a 300 on RC so I definitely recommend the OAT Achiever because it exposes you to the types of questions that will be on the OAT that will challenge you. The RC on Kaplan is way too easy

RC on the actual OAT is much harder. The topic is harder, and questions are harder. I took OAT a week ago. I got TS 400 but AA 380 because I got 320 on RC. Search-n-destroy mathod didn't work b/c questions were not so straight forward. Most of the questions required understanding of the whole passage.

search and destroy means you look at the questions only and look for the answers without reading the entire passage beforehand

"Search and destroy" is a commonly adopted method, but there is no guarantee that it would work on all passages on the real reading test. It is rather important that you have an alternate strategy for the harder ones.

So, what's the recommended method that would have the RC well handled regardless of what's out there?

You need to have more than one methods. S & D for the easy passage; conventional approach for the difficult one.

i guess ill be the first to post the results from my experience with the new scoring.

Subject Ach1 Ach2 Ach3 ADA Actual
QR 380 300 370 400 400
RC 300 300 340 400 340
Bio 320 290 310 320 330
GCh 380 320 290 350 350
Org 360 330 330 350 390
Phy 300 320 270 360 330
TS 350 320 300 350 360
AA 340 310 320 360 360

So as you can see, the ADA practicae test on OAT website is the closest, but achiever helps a lot with pointing out weaknesses and junk. im disappointed in my RC Bio and Phy, but they arent bad

I think there are more than one scale used on the real OAT, and believe achiever's scores generally turn up lower than the actual ones.

Thanks much, guys for all the heads up and inputs. Here are my scores compared to the real ones:

Subject Ach1 Ach2 Ach3 ADA Actual
QR 360 330 360 390 380
RC 290 320 330 400 350
Bio 300 260 320 360 340
GCh 310 320 330 380 350
Org 340 320 330 360 340
Phy 320 280 330 380 400
TS 320 300 330 380 360
AA 320 310 330 380 360

My scores are somewhat between the Achiever's and the ADA's. I think The extra help from Achiever that kind of over prepared me is worth the effort and venture especially for the reading and the physics sections.

They will be higher than your achiever scores. I scored about 40-100 points higher on most sections. The first test is the easiest the other two are very difficult.

I couldn't apply search-n-destroy on achiever's reading either. So, what would you guys suggest other than reading the entire passage first which would take me a long while to get through?

I've been checking out the ADA website and it was not clear as to whether or not they offered a practice test. Given that ADA scores were posted, how can that practice test be accessed? Or is it merely a recalculation of the OAT scores by the ADA?

That's for the DAT. The OAT sample test is here:

https://www.ada.org/oat/oat_sample_test.pdf

with the proper score chart on the last page of the document.

So I didn't end up taking the ADA's practice OAT, but here are my Achiever vs. OAT scores. I found Achiever to be much better to prep just because it was so much harder yet formatted very similar to the OAT.

Achiever 1, 2, 3, OAT

QR 370, 360, N/A, 340
RC 300, 340, N/A, 370
Bio 330, 320, N/A, 350
GC 340, 330, N/A, 400
OC 360, 320, N/A, 350
Phy 240, 320, 280, 310
TS 330, 330, N/A, 360
AA 320, 330, N/A, 350

AS you can see, some of my scores are different across the stats. Don't just assume that you will get a higher score on the OAT than you did on Achiever. Also, my GC may be inflated just because I recently re-took the first half of gen chem for a better grade.

So yeah, overall I would recommend Achiever.

Didn't take the 3rd practice test, but here's how it broke down:

Subject Ach1 Ach2 Ach3 ADA Actual

QR 340 350 N/A 400 360
RC 280 290 N/A 400 400
Bio 360 310 N/A 400 380
GC 370 330 N/A 370 360
OC 330 330 N/A 350 390
Phy 300 320 N/A 360 350
TS 350 330 N/A 390 380
AA 330 320 N/A 380 370

I finished the first 2 achiever tests about a week before the actual, and used the week leading up to work on my weak areas. Then took the ADA 2 days before the real one and found it to be slightly easier in most areas than the real thing. Achiever is great for finding your weak spots but ADA is the closest to the real thing. I would definitely recommend utilizing both.

Also, I used my 15 min break to write down as many physics equations as I could remember which helped out quite a bit. And don't forget to use the calculator on QR, I brain farted until about halfway through and then wasn't able to finish in time.

Has the "scoring chart" on the ADA practice OAT been re-calibrated since the actual scoring mechanism has changed?

Here are a few more data points for you guys! I just wrote the OAT today, and I took the last acheiver test on Monday.

Study Resources: Kaplan MCAT, OAT, and DAT books, as well as OAT Acheiver and khanacademy/chad's videos/freelance teacher videos.

OAT Acheiver is without a doubt more difficult than the real OAT. However it is important not to view the Acheiver exams as simply practice exams; they are much more than that. When used correctly, the Acheiver exams can be an invaluable tool to diagnose areas of weakness in your understanding of concepts and your general knowledge base. Go through the solutions to each and every question whether you got them correct or incorrect. If you find that you are consistently getting certain concepts/question incorrect, or are getting questions correct for the wrong reasons, immediately turn to your other resources and go over the material that seems to be giving you trouble!

I found that the QR section on the real OAT was actually quite similar to the Acheiver QR tests, but I found that the RC on the real OAT was MUCH easier than the Acheiver tests. The passages were more organized, easier to read and altogether more interesting. The questions were a bit more straight forward and often came sequentially so it was easy to locate the answers in the passages. As for the Bio, GC, Phys, and Ochem sections on the real thing, they seemed to be harder than that ADA exam but easier than the Acheiver exam.

Thought I should bring this thread up again, but too bad my Achiever has expired and couldn't list down the score comparison. But if you study hard and treat the sample tests seriously, you are bound to score a lot better on the OAT than the Achiever.

Fully agreed as you could see from my posted scores above.

Hey guys, I got very low scores on my first achiever test. I know they are supposed to be harder than the real things. But is there any advice you have that I should be doing to make sure I will be getting great scores on the OAT?

I think just keep going over things. Go over the areas you got wrong, since you can click on each test and take a look at the general topic area. It means you should review that area more or learn that specific concept. That really helps me!!

I switch off studying then taking a practice test when I feel like I know more than I did before, and after I reviewed all the topics I was weak in!!

Hey , I just took my first Achiever test. Will the RC Articles be just as long on the actual OAT ? I totally ran out of time on the Achiever exam. That was the only section I ran out of time on.

Achiever's RC are truly brutal, but I'm glad it has pushed me to the brink to prepare harder on this section. I finally managed to pull off a 340 on the actual thing. One of their articles either on test 6 or 7 even appeared on my test; not word for word though but has truly helped speed me through midway. Bravo!

Glad that it has helped you pull through. The achiever is known to drive you crazy but it is definitely worth the effort to over prepare for the OAT.

This should give lots of hope to those struggling with Achiever's practice tests. My advice to you folks is to get the 7 complete test package. Trust me, it will cover you for the worst that could happen on the OAT.

Any more score comparisons coming?

I just took mine yesterday and here it goes:

Subject Ach1 Ach2 Ach3 Ach4 Ach5 Ach6 Ach7 ADA Actual
QR 350 310 350 300 280 320 330 390 380

AA 340 320 310 300 300 330 340 370 380

As everyone says, just don't freak out with the low practice scores. The questions might be harder, but I was not pressed for time and just kept learning from my mistakes. The hard work would pay off eventually.:)

Impressive scores indeed.

I'm currently practicing with the Achiever before my test in a couple weeks. I was wondering did you guys use the timer when practicing? I'm finding that I'm running out of time due to the complexity of the achiever questions. Although when I take the ADA test I'm able to answer the questions much easier.

When I go through and take the Achiever tests WITHOUT the timer my scores are significantly higher by like 40 points.
