Hi everybody
I know that all residency programs are good and accredited. But, certainely some of them are more inferior to others, based on program itself or geographic location or other factors. It would be a great courtesy of you guys if you list the programs you wouldnt go or would rank them down the list, and if possible at all the reason for that.
My appreciation. :)

I hear Denver is a weak program. Cincinatti too.

I was going to post Tampa but figured it was so obvious that it didn't need to be said :D

And Mayo. Wouldn't go there. It's too cold.

The worst programs, in no particular order, from consensus here at SDN are:

USF
Duke
Arizona
Maricopa
Denver
UT-Houston
Baton Rouge
ECU
Wayne State U
MetroHealth
Yale
Albert Einstein in Philly
Johns Hopkins

Would avoid like the plague.

I hear In-n-Out Burger is starting a PGY1-4 EM Residency in Nevada... anyone have any thoughts? Do you think you will see enough pathology there? I'm worried about the trauma experience...

not much trauma........but you'll be an expert at food poisoning.

In-n-Out? Dude, if I were applying for residency again, I'd be so there!

"Double double, animal-style, no pickles!"

For those of you deprived of the In-n-Out phenomenon, it's a fast-food burger chain in California and spreading. The food is excellent for fast food, they pay their employees considerably more than the going rate at other fast food joints, and the employees are unfailingly courteous and polite. What they are most famous for are the "specials" that aren't on any menu nor advertised. You just have to know what they are, or else you just get plain burgers.

Here's a good summary.

Definitely avoid the Wal-Mart EM program...They discriminate against women (and DO's). I heard they're on probation for violating the 80-hour rule.

Definitely avoid the EM residency put up my McDonalds. They absolutely jacked up President Clinton.

I heard they were cleared of those charges.

I've been to the In-N-Out at I15 and Tropicana many times and I can assure you that the pathology there rivals any big city ER.

I know for a fact that every single one of the programs below has something wrong with it that is worth avoiding. Sorry all the clowns up above wouldn't let you in on this. Please don't apply to any of these programs.

thank you for the list. Do you think Denver should be in the list?!
What do you think about Kern and Fresno in CA?

Either you're flamebaiting, or you just don't get the message. Any such list of "programs you wouldn't go to" is nearly useless to anybody but the person making the list. It's a personal decision having more to do with outside factors than with the qualities of the program. Even the qualities of the program mean nothing if you don't get along with the program director or other residents there. So ask a more specific question than "which programs suck", or you'll get nothing but funny answers.

edit: btw, since you don't seem to have gotten it, every single reply you've gotten on this thread has been a joke. Those lists are mostly littered with programs that various residents here go to or graduated from as playful jabs at each other or ourselves. A few of the lists include very prominent and long-standing programs.

Um, I hope you didn't take him seriously with that post. Quinn was joking with that list because most of us frequent fliers here on SDN are from those programs he listed.

The unintentional humor on this thread is the funniest part...

Actually, Denver and Cinci offered me positions outside the Match, I scoffed at them. Pitt said I would be allowed to completely skip the PGY1 year and start as a PGY2, since I correctly answered the "if you were a vegetable, what vegetable would you be question" during the interviews. I chose USF because the residents' salary starts at 70k and PGY3 = 94k a year, not to mention a company car (BMW 540i).

Honestly I have no clue. :) I do know Americans receive much better pay.
The salary for a PGY-3 in Canada is $53,000.
A PGY-3 in the US makes approximately the same, assuming you're quoting Canadian dollars, though there is a moderate amount of regional variation.

If that is Canadian dollars that is about $42,000 in US$ that is less than some programs for a PGY 3 but better than others! If that is 53K US$ value in Canada that is way better as a PGY 3 than most US programs.

I'm kinda pissed because of the color choices. I had to settle for "Jet Black" instead of the classic "BMW silver" for my 540i the program gave me. I'm thinking of transferring just because I didnt' get the iDrive.
Q

Isnt that a reportable violation?
dont let the bastards get you down, Quinn.

Pffffh on your silver...I'm going to look at (right now) a red 525i and a black 540i.

There's a PGY-1 in surgery who's paying cash for a Lexus. Two gas residents (independently) wondered how much surgery was paying surgeons and EM docs, if we're buying BMW and Lexus as housestaff.

I told our Program Director to offer the interns next year the choice of the either a BMW or an Audi. I think if we are going to spend 3 years here, we should atleast have the choice of the car they're going to give us.

Hey I also heard that the program Scrubbs goes to sucks too.

No! No! No!, Though I agree with the BMW, as a matter of fact my US Fellow has the M3 (for real)...the better choice is note the Audi, but the Infinity G35, with a kicking 220 watt Bose and 12 speakers + Sub....and a full-size rimmed spare!!

My brother recently sold his convertible M3, and that was a sweet ride. Not to thrilled about all the electronics problems though.

Gotta be convertible for me though. 350z is probably the best thing in its class now. Maybe time to upgrade my s2000.

You guys got Bimmers? I had to settle for the used Pinto that the program gave us!

Pinto? Back in my day, all they gave us was a rusty bicycle... with no wheels!

Pinto? I'm rockin the Tracer XL. That's right - my wheelchair is bumpin up on some 21's - cuz that's how we do it on the east coast. My program trumps out the third years with Benzos, so we get the duce duce and the 200 watt subs - cuz you gots to have da bump! They even sprung for the optional IV stand. Yeah - pimp...

I dont see any thing funny about my question. It was very specific and yes, very personal. However, if the people who write in this thread wish to share their personal thaughts and experiences, they will creat a great source of information about various programs nationwide. Just think a little before jumping to a conclusion. Anyway thanks for the response.

Seriously, I rode my old bicycle to every one of my rotations during residency even if it was snowing and 5:00 AM. Even now I drive a VW golf. Oh well thats the price you pay...

I guess you don't realize it but your original question sounds like you're asking people to "dis" other people's residency programs, something which we civilized folk here are reluctant to do. You'll get more responses and more useful information from a question like, "What programs did you apply to and why?"
