16th sounds good too me. As long as it is after 4pm or so.

So, it seems that some people can't make it on the 16th and others can't make it on the 17th? I guess we should take a vote, that way, based on your responses, we can begin to get an idea of how many people will show.

Well...I will def show up..but I think the thread stalled because everyone sees on the thread that there is 1 person that can't make the 16th and 1 person that can't make the 17th and no one wants to vote "against" anyone..including me...lol...anyone have any ideas??

theres a facebook group for the event scheduled for the 16th

i say we all blow off our finals and just get drunk everyday :D

Quick question for current students,

I am in state. Is a budget for $34,000 enough to survive on? with insurance and living on campus, it doesnt seem like it will be...

bellacnella if you look at the information provided they make a really convincing argument for needing about 50k, unfortunately, if living on campus.

I took a look at it myself and I couldn't really pare down anything on the list.

And I won't be able to make the event guys but hopefully we'll meet again. I have a long drive to D.C. in the morning on the 17th and new york isn't right around the corner for me.:(

wait voiceofreason, if you cant come on the 16th either then we should just make the fb event for the 17th so the ppl graduating might be able to make it?

btw voice have fun at the beer festival :p

neither the 16th or the 17th are doable for me so you guys can go ahead and do whichever is more convenient for the group.

there will be other meetings i trust so we'll all meet sooner or later :)

Hey bella..Yeah, I am somewhat (I took out $8000 more than you) in the same boat as you...I sent in my app for 52,000...Apparently, the max I could get was 42,000...I will be living on campus and I am in-state as well.. The way I see it is that it might be best to take out too little and then, as the year goes by, get a better feel for your budget...Worst case scenario is that we apply for more money...

All the mandatory school costs (tuition, fees, health insurance) add up to about $25,000 for in-state students. From there, you need enough money to pay your rent, utilities, food, personal expenses, etc. You also need to buy books, medical equipment, gas (some preceptors are far from school), and on and on...Plus, the fall semester you get less back as a refund because there are a lot of one time fees (i.e. insurance) that are only charged in the fall. That makes money tight...

Unless you have a considerable amount of money saved up (or a sugar daddy, like I do :), I would suggest that you take as much as they will give you. You don't want to be stressed about having no money. School can be stressful enough. Good luck! :luck:

i'd like to consider the sugar daddy option how did you go about getting one of those?

i'm seconding the sugar daddy idea. except, instead of relying a on singular sugar daddy, can we disperse the responsibilities upon multiple sweetened relatives... a couple of cinnamon aunts, some gingerbread cousins, a marshmallow grandfather or does onus have to strictly be on the sugar daddy?

... sorry, this was my lamest post ever.

Thanks, I guess I am just going to send in for an adjustment of my financial aid. I originally asked for the max to begin with, which is like 51,000 I think, so I don't know what happened.

Haha :) Yeah that would be great but my family has no money.

I am currently looking for a sugar "daddy" but does he have to be old? ::ewww::

i just want to meet a naughty urologist.

Edit: you know what I'm talkin' about.

Hi,
Is this information readily available on the UMDNJ website? If not, do you know when it will be made available? Will it be any earlier than next fiscal year?

They make the important stuff hard to find. Here is the website:
http://www.umdnj.edu/studentfinancialaid/app_process/stu_budgets.htm

This is last year, not sure when the new one will come out. Will be soon probably. They just had the meetings at the schools where students can come out and protest the tuition raises. It will go up...maybe 4-5%.

Also, when I quote $25,000, I am talking tuition and fees only from that chart.

:) Back to Step I...

some people are getting financial aid info but does anyone know when we actually have to make a payment for tuition? hopefully not today (may 1)!! all i have sent in so far is the deposit to keep my spot in the class. enjoy final exams folks!

In August.

PB - you've received your financial aid award letter already? And if so, may I ask when you turned in your FAFSA and UMDNJ Fin Aid app? Thanks!

hey caliprincess...i got my award letter too, my FAFSA was done mid februaryish and my umdnj fin aid app was complete about three weeks ago....i got my award letter at the end of last week, hope that helps =)

btw for the chinese food/wine thing...any rutgers nb ppl wanna go into the city together? i know a few others who want to do that too so let me know )

hey caliprincess...I completed my FAFSA in mid Feb and completed my financial aid application about a month back..so I pretty much handed my stuff in along the same timeline as scrubsrfun...hope I helped:)

Hey Please/Scrubs, thanks for the info. I guess I should be getting my package soon (hopefully) then because I turned in both my FAFSA/Finaid app Feb 28.

O and Scrubs, I am coming from south Jersey and I would have to go straight through New Brunswick to go the city. So if you find out for sure about getting a group to meet up in New Brunswick --> NYC then PM when it's finalized :)

Hey folks,

I'm not going to be able to make the June 6th housing day I've heard so much about. Is there a consensus about where off-campus people are planning on living? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hey guys and gals,

I was informed by housing that there is currently a waitlist for 2-bedroom apts at 180 West. However, I feel this hard to believe as they still have not opened the 14th floor. Economically speaking, that makes absolutely no sense as vacant rooms equal lost income for them. I'd greatly appreciate any information you guys might have.

I heard they don't open the 14th floor and that if they did they would lose money from having to pay electricity and heating

Hey, first time poster here. Will be at NJMS this fall; just wondering, has anyone felt concerned about safety? Not necessarily on campus, but just in terms of the city of Newark. I guess you have to be careful in any city, but still, Newark has a slightly more sinister reputation than most... :) Anyway, just wondering if anyone was apprehensive about this, and how best to exert caution...

hey odyssey. i am currently a grad student at UMDNJ, and although i commute there now, i dont find safety that big of an issue. i will be a first year med student next semester too and i will be living in society hill (a couple blocks from the school). I mean like you said with any city you should be catious. but i know they will tell us during orientation that there is "safety in numbers", and also if you feel unsafe in anyway (i.e. late at night and ur walking to your car) you can call umdnj police to either escort you or patrol the area to make sure everything is safe. As per going out in newark, no one really does, unless they drive to ironbound for dinner (and driving isnt an issue in newark). They will explain safety to us probably a lot during orientation. any other questions let me know

COWGIRL, for off campus listings in the area, this is the link. I know real soon there will be a bunch of places available as finals die down, and people figure out where theyre living. Hope it helps: http://andromeda.rutgers.edu/~reslife/off_campus_housing_list2.htm

Cool. Thanks so much for the info! Yeah, I'm sure they'll delve into all of this during orientation.

if anyone is still interested in meeting and hasn't heard yet we are planning on getting together may 17 and because some people can't make it then also this friday at stuff yer face in new brunswick at 8

okay, so i realize this is a long shot question. but at the last student orientation, there was a surgeon said that if we interested in getting involved in any particular field and wanted more experience, we should contact him. I can't remember his name or his title, does anyone know who I am talking about?

yeah monu if you're talking about "second look" there was a pediatric surgeon who said we (the country) needed more pediatric surgeons and both he and Dr. Heinrich said that if you were interested in pediatric surgery specifically the school would go out of their way to help you get it. Something to that effect.

well i went and looked but I can't find him for sure. I think its Dr. Ian Thomas Cohen but none of his faculty pages contain a picture of him so I can't be sure.

do you guys know if june 6th is only going to be a housing day or are they gonna do other stuff? is it like a time to meet classmates?

This is most definitely Dr. Cohen. He is also the Dean of Students at NJMS so you will all get to know him very well over the next four years. He is the only Pediatric Surgeon at University Hospital (I think, unless they recently hired someone). I know him quite well and I helped him coordinate the Pediatric Surgery Shadowing Program last year. He's from South Africa originally so he has a neat accent. Get in touch with him when you start school (or earlier I guess) to set up some shadowing opportunities.

well I will be at Newark...so if anyone is swinging my way...:)

does anyone have their umdnj email address? if so, could you please be so kind to share who you got in contact with to get it? thanks.

I was actually wondering that too... or if we have student ID #'s yet? Thanks!

you can call the admissions office to find out your ID number, but I dont know about the email address!

hah you guys are so anxious huh? i would say forget about med school for the next couple months, cause we all are going to be dreading it come study time. but for those who wont listen to my advice, the email address would be first six letters of your last name (if you have six or more, if not it will be your last name) followed by your first and middle initials (ie. mine [email protected] for mark j nicolau)...but you will get it automatically, im sure theyll say everything during orientation.

btw anatomy is great, i juss finished it, and vasan is the man

happy summer
