All right, I'll probably get dissed out for at least the first question since no one should think about money even though most of us are in debt after medical school...

# 1) For the neurosurgery residency, are the PGY-1 interns on a salary during the internship year, or does this not start until the official residency?

#2) After neurosurg residency, the neurosurg typically doesn't become board-certified until a number of years after residency. During this span of non-board certification, does the academic neurosurg receive less pay due to not yet having the "gold standard" of board-certification?

Thank you. I'm not interested in it for the money but some of us have major debt to worry about!

Theres nothing wrong with wanting to make money. Money is very important. Not the most important, but very important.

Can't add much to your questions though

there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to make money after years of being a poor student
after all ANYTHING becomes a job after a while!

As for #1, yes you are salaried for your intern year...right now PGY-1 salaries range from about 35,000 to 45,000 per year depending on location and program.
