I've heard recently that neurologists can actually do a lot of procedures through a NIR fellowship. I was wondering whether there has been any talk about neurologists being able to do DBS procedures in the future. Are there any neurologists who do DBS procedures like neurosurgeons and in my ignorance is there any reason to think that they won't in the future be able to given that there are already many doing NIR?

We aren't ever going to do the craniotomy. We already do the targeting, recording, programming and testing in the OR as well as selecting the patients and the best target, and drive most decision making intraop. At every major DBS center I know of, DBS is majority neurologist driven. The neurosurgeons don't regard their portion to be all that interesting or important, as a simple craniotomy with stereotactic guidance is pretty much the easiest thing they are ever asked to do.
