The numbers do not mean the number of spots available but for the duration of the residency

1 2-year residency
2 2-year master’s degree or 4-year to 5-year PhD
3 3-year residency
4 4-year residency
5 1-year fellowship

Is there a place to find the number of spots available for each residency? Could a 6-year OMFS program be authorized if an applicant was given NADDS? Is there a different application process for NADDS?

Please refer to last year's application acceptance thread to guess how many slots will be available this year.

Peds, ortho would most likely be a spot of either 1 or 2.

NADDS currently does not allow 6 year programs i believe (I could be wrong)

Someone last year got 6 year NADDS. Not happening for FTIS or FTOS

Is AEGD-1 graduate allow to apply for Comprehensive Dentistry (AEGD-2)?

They picked people for ortho and Pedo this year? damn

Also, is the only reason people would do ortho and peds FTOS in the navy is b/c they are looking for a career?

With all that experience, wouldn't they be super competitive as a civilian in regular programs?

They don’t have a peds program, so the only option is out service. And they send orthos to the tri-service program in San Antonio. I think technically the AF largely runs the ortho program, someone correct me if I’m wrong on that.

If you’re a LT/LCDR trying to do ortho, why would you do FTOS ortho with more time added to your initial commitment?

Wouldn’t it make more sense to finish your hpsp commitment and then separate/match ortho?

1. Some folks want to make a career out of the military

2. Civilian ortho has more spots

3. You get your tuition paid for PLUS a full military salary while in FTOS. A lot people have dependents and want to keep the benefits by staying in while attending school.

I believe it's at Lackland, yes.

Yea, this is surprising. There was such doom and gloom talk about reduction in specialties and outsourcing. Then they take more Comp, Endo, OMFS, ortho, and Prosth than last year. Plus added Exodontia back.

The facilities are in Lackland, really nice clinic. When I was stationed there the Ortho program was run by a Navy CAPT, super nice guy. I think he got the position because it was slated for someone else but they suddenly passed away. I might be getting the details mixed up a bit.

I’m surprised that Perio was so competitive!

At least for OMFS, with more commissioning of new ford class carriers, OMFS presence onboard is more needed than ever (They act as a backup anesthesia, dental dept/divo as well as their primary facial trauma-multi role provider)

I have seen alot of fresh grads of residency get placed right into carriers for their first assignment

So doesnt surprise me that they are getting more of them.

As for other specialties, some of the senior specialists are getting out as well at LCDR and CDR level

Have to meet that gap somehow

Are you able to specify if you want FTOS, FTIS, NADDS? In certain situations NADDS could be difficult for some people I imagine.

Yes. In your application you will be asked to select which route you wish to go. Your preference will be taken into consideration not a guarantee. Some residencies are only FTOS, like pediatrics or ortho to name a few.

I wish to be considered for (check only one): Only FTIS / Only FTOS / Primarily FTIS, Secondary FTOS / Primarily FTOS, Secondary FTIS / Considered Equally for FTIS and FTOS

Dental Students Only: in some cases Navy Active Duty for Delay Specialty Program (NADDS) may be an option for training. In addition to your above FTIS/FTOS options, check if you wish to be considered for NADDS: Navy Active Duty for Delay Specialty Program (Dental Students Only)

Stupid question. Is there a difference between the Naval Postgraduate Dental School OMS residency and the Walter Reed OMS residency? Or are they the same program?

NPDS doesn't have an OMFS residency program, but Navy Dental Corps has OMFS programs at Walter Reed Bethesda, Portsmouth, and San Diego.
