Military Externships

So, if I understand right, externships range from 1 week to 2 months or so. As an extern, you just observe or assist the whole time you're there and get to rub shoulders with program heads. My question is whether HPSP students can do an externship in non-military programs. For example, could I do a one or two week externship in endo in Texas while being a Navy HPSP student or would I have to do it at the Navy postdoctorate dental school (NNMC)? I guess I'm thinking the Navy might get mad if I had the chance to do an externship and did one in Texas instead of with the Navy. Any input?
