With all of the nonsense happening with the ABIM and MOC, if one wanted to do strictly critical care down the line, what would be the minimum board certifications one could reasonably hold? Is maintaining all of your IM, pulmonary, and CC certifications as much of an expensive, time consuming nightmare as it seems? Could you just keep one BC to save money and hassle (i.e. just keep your CC boards if you plan on only doing CC)?

It's all kind of in flux at the moment so not really clear. What is clear is that ABIM does not require you to maintain (or renew) IM certification for the vast majority of subspecialty certifications. And if you're doing MOC, you only need to do it for one board and you'll get credit for the others.

So as long as your contract will allow you to do so, you only need to keep the certification that you actually intend to use.
