Ha ha nice. I'm not done yet, but looks like I may be rounding out at about 35 programmes myself. I'm basically applying to every programme west of the Mississippi, looking to get out of the Midwest and back home.

Hmmm. Cool.
Why not Vanderbilt?

I was told that very competitive applicants (ie competitive for ANY specialty) should apply to 8-10, moderately competitive to around 15, and less competitive to 20+.

Im not a competitive applicant....or rather a less competitive applicant :)

Im actually going to replace colorado and musc on the list to with other less competitive programs....

I know exactly how you feel :-( I'm still gonna try for Colorado though.

I have a poor gpa and had to take step1 twice.....if you've passed your boards on the first try and did average on your rotations, I don't think colorado would be a reach at all because it's a very very large program(12 spots/year)

good mix....

It seems like y'all have done some thorough research into programs. Any info you could pass along regarding the Wright St program in Dayton, OH or the UTHSCSA program in San Antonio, TX?

The San Antonio program is huge, and I have heard from med students there that they seem pretty happy. They do have a good mix of FMG's so it can't be too competitive for USMG's

Sounds like someone's in the Air Force.

I liked the SA program when I interviewed there. Met another applicant who wanted to stay there (he went to med school there) and the AF sent him to Dayton! LOL. Gotta love the military.

Yep you guessed it. Given that these two programs aren't of the highest prominence, I don't typically hear much about them. From what I can gather, San Antonio seems to be the stronger of the 2, but I'm curious to hear any other opinions that may be out there. Esp regarding wright st. Thanks!

curious- are those two programs(the texas-SA one and the wright state one) for military only or give preference to military? If so, I need to erase them.....

UTHSCSA is a combined program, IIRC, they take 10 civilians and 6 military or something like that.

Wright St in Dayton is also combined military and civilian. I don't think civilian and military applicants compete for residency positions in either of these programs, the PGY-1 positions are kept independent of one another.

I'm pretty sure you are right. You could always check their website, but I recall their's to be pretty outdated.

I am positive they take a good number of civilians (I'm not military), and SA will probably be one of my top 5.

I don't think you should take MUSC off the list. They have not filled in recent years (what I have heard anyway- I have not verified this)- very large program with a night float = may not always fill.

Wow... that's a lot of programs. You're in for a fun interview season. You should go on all 39 interviews and make a blog about it.

4th year at Colorado. The chair of the Department , Dr. Friedman recommended programs based on where I would like to live. Nervous since I had to take Step 1 twice (passed second time with a good score and passed Step 2 CK), but did REALLY well in clinical rotations and have lots of awards/2 publications. Here's my list.

1. Dartmouth
2. Yale
3. Columbia
4. Harvard Longwood
5. McLean/MGH
6. Cambridge Health Alliance
7. Johns Hopkins
8. Maryland-Sheppard Pratt
9. Pittsburgh
10. Penn
11. Brown
12. Iowa
13. Colorado
14. UT - Southwestern
15. UCLA
16. UCLA - Harbor
17. UC San Diego
18. UC San Fran
19. Medical College of Wisconsin
20. Oregon
21. Washington - Seattle

So far crickets.

So you want to live... basically anywhere in the continental US? Personally I would add a few safety schools, especially with your repeating step 1.

Hey guys, when and who did you guys talk to re: what programs to apply to?
