Late Jump into Ortho Track

I am wrapping up my MS3 year, initially interested in gen surg now switching to ortho. I don't have any connections or pubs related to ortho, and have not applied to any away rotations yet (can I do more than 1 this year?)

253 step 1, mostly Passes third year (including surgery), but have AOA from first two years
6 abstracts/pubs/presentations (+1 in jama pending)
low-tier MD program

What should my next steps be at this point? Is it too late considering I haven't made any connections to the department all year?

at this point I think a research year would be useful to get connections and build your ortho app. It will increase your ceiling for sure. Would highly recommend

Is it very hard to match without showing early commitment to ortho? Or are you saying that research year would help me get into better programs?

There is an "ortho chances" thread stickied, more traffic there I would bet just fyi

Half of my match class got into ortho 3rd year. They all matched.
