I have pretty much made up my mind about school next year and will most likely be attending Western COMP. But I have heard things about Pomona, specifically that it is not a very nice town. Is this true? Is the school in a safe place? What about housing? Any input from current students or residents of the area would be helpful.

I have spoken with a few students about housing in Pomona or near Western. It is my understanding that about half of the students live in LA and commute east while the other half lives further east and commutes west. I went to a conference there a couple of years ago and was not impressed at all by the community.

My wife just sent me a link to an article about a shooting.

As random and sad as that is, I'm still going to COMP.

Dunno if I'll want to eat at the BK, or live in Pomona, though.

That is a horrendous story. I was kind of happy that I never got an interview at COMP. I liked the school, but SoCal bugs me and I wouldn't want to live anywhere near the school. (Not that the area around UHS is great, but at least it is relatively confined.)

Pomona is not that nice of a place to live but the communities around it are very nice and safe---try Claremont, Diamond Bar, Chino, Upland, Walnut, Rowland Heights. These are all good neighborhoods and not that far from Pomona (all within max 20 mile radius). Here is a hint- if you are planning on driving on the freeways to school each day, it is better to live west of the school - less traffic because everyone heading west is going to LA.

Well, you can't live in fear - especially in regards to totally random acts. The guy in the article sounded way, way off. Crazy people exist everywhere - take the area I live near now - Wakefield, Massachusetts, where that guy shot and killed 7 of his office coworkers. Wakefield is actually a very nice part of the state - far nicer than Pomona.

It's media's job to sensationalize particularly heinous crimes. People didn't start movng out of Wakefeild in droves, nor did they pack up the kids and head for Montana after Stockton.

And speaking of confined - there was a guy in Western Mass a long time ago who shot up a bunch of his classmates at Simmons Rock of Bard College. It was in a relatively rural area of the state.

You can't live in fear.

I'm a current student at COMP and I also grew up around the Pomona area (Diamond Bar to be exact). I stay and study on campus relatively late and haven't had any problems (the school does provide nite guards that will escort you to your car). I wouldn't want to particularly live in Pomona but there are nice areas that are close enough to school to make it an easy commute. From Diamond Bar I drive about 15 minutes everyday to school and Diamond Bar is a nice area. Many students end up living in Chino Hills and Claremont, both very nice areas. There is no on-campus housing, but there are many apartment buildings near campus and if you don't mind driving then you can get a place close to campus but not in Pomona.

I am a third year student at COMP and I live on the border of Pomona and Claremont in a so-called "nice" area of Pomona. A month ago I spent a day in the local court house as a witness in a death penalty murder case. In my first year of medical school I witnessed a man get shot in the head about 50 feet from my front door. Pomona is very urban and bad things happen there as you expect in any urban city in America. I was freaked for a few months because I come from a small town where crime is very low. I still live in the same house and have no intention of moving any time soon. Pomona is no Brentwood, but it is not San bernardino either thank God! Good luck to you!
