Hi!

I'm a first year medical student in Scotland. Here in the UK (United Kingdom=Scotland, England, Wales and Nothern Ireland), you do two foundation years (similar to an internship) before you move on to specialist training. These are referred to as FY1 and FY2. Specialist training can be up to 8 years in length, since the working hours are regulated by the European working time directive.

My feel is that the US system is more structured and effective if you know what you want to do residency-wise. Getting a Foundation Year1 spot might be extremely tough, and completing FY2 does not guarantee entry into specialist training.

Unfortunately I don't know very much about switching over to the UK system but you might find the following websites useful.

Bear in mind that the Republic of Ireland is a separate country while Northern Ireland is part of the UK. Maybe someone here can point you in the right direction?
