Just curious. What kind of hours are you other guys putting in as interns on your actual psychiatry rotations?

70 or so. some weeks it's 60, others it's 85, depending on call. but >80 week after week - that is too much. more than i expected but I am enjoying it still.

psych months:
40-65 hrs week, depending on the service

medicine wards: 70-80

medicine clinic (two months)= 35

neurology: 40

Thus far:
Neurology 70-ish, medicine 70-ish, psych 60-ish

Only been on psych so far: 50-60 hrs/wk

Floor IM ~ 70-80 hrs/wk (~1 overnight call/weekend)
ICU ~ 80-90 hrs/wk
Consult Neuro ~ 40-45 hrs/wk

psych inpt ~60
med inpt 80-95(a particularly hellish week)

do all of u who are working less not have call? Im averaging 85 plus every week, although Im on inpatient medicine, but never less. Im dreaming of less. Call every week included. I never knew there was home call. Hellish week this week almost 95, several medical and psych emergencies..

Couldn't tell you because I don't do any psychiatry until May 2010!! In the meantime, I'm a variety of general pediatrics rotations which have ranged from 60-75 hours/week.

IP psych is about 60 counting in house call. IP med is pushing 80 (also counting call). IP peds is 60-70, we don't do call, they just make us wait around all day like a concentration camp for their crazy face to face repeat back and forth sign out. I think most pediatric interns need a psychiatrist.

to all the non-interns and attendings out there...how many hours/days off per week is appropriate in your opinion?

Rotating through IM. Averaging 80 plus hours a week but only about 40 hours on paper. My time sheet says that I work from 8:30am to 4:30pm Mon to Fri with weekends off! Yeah right! I had to redo my time sheet the first month because I had logged in my actual hours.

I think it depends on the kind of practice one has during the week (as an attending, which I am not). I like the idea of one weekend in 4-6 as an attending, but I am leaning toward inpatient right now as I consider the future.

As a second year resident, I am pulling three calls a month plus Mon-Friday clinic hours. This is not bad at all for a second year resident. I have time to get a lot done. Technically, this would probably equate to three six-day weeks and one full weekend off. As a third year, I have one call a month and then- as a fourth year, one pager call/month. I think my call schedule is great- I will be moonlighting quite a bit as a third & fourth year.
