This may be a bit premature, however I have a medicine Sub I in May and was curious if anyone had tips on how to excel? I plan on IM so would like to do well. Thanks!

Hello there,

honestly, the best thing you can do is have the patients praise you on rounds. Call specialists. Know what is going on with your patients. Throw in a couple of "personal" things about them to show you went the extra mile.
Without being asked, prepare a 10 minute presentation on a topic pertaining to one of your patients. Do this at least 2 times per week.
Know everyone on the list to some extent. You don't have to know the minutae of every single person that is not your patient, but having a general idea of everyone will be reflective of your willingness to learn. After yu preround on your patients, ask the senior resident to shadow along with them so you can meet patients face to face.

you know, I have to be completely honest. SubIs are hit or miss. You can do every small thing right but just be in a situation where you still are not going to be taken seriously. Do everything you can, but do not, even if your life depends on it, trust program directors or residents if they say they like you.
