So as I said I'm 1/8th native american, my parents put on my school papers when it asks for race that I am native american. Can I put this on my college applications that I am native american.

When I look at colleges like yale and georgetown race/ethnicity are factors that decide if your accepted. I am actively involved in the native american community.

So how much of a difference will it make if I am native american to colleges. Say I have awesome stats.

Lastly will it help in interviews if I state I am native american to look more native american, ala tan, long hair?

you have to look native american. ie if you dont look, talk, or sing like the following video...you will be automatically rejected b/c you lied on your app and clearly you are not native american.

Lots of people claim their Native American heritage and do not "look" like it at all; I'm sure adcoms have met them before. It's fine to look however as you want (ie you don't have to change how you look just to be more "Native American")

This brings back my painful memory that I'm also 1/8 native american I think. Unfortunately, my great grandfather was adopted and his papers were burned. He grew up around racism and won't admit to anyone that he is native american. Sucks. (Yes, this is true, even if it sounds dumb).

I'd say go ahead, especially since you are active in the community.

1/8 is sort of try-hard though. You probably have no clue how to wield a tomahawk. In which case, you ain't no Injun.
 
...I look totally white... but i'm half Mexican and speak pretty damn good spanish. I actually don't like to tell people i'm half Mexican... I have a white name... i like to say i just happened to pick up great Spanish because a Spanish speaking gringa is more impressive than a Spanish speaking Chicana! Now i'm struggling to learn Arabic...let's hope that works out as well as learning Spanish did because i actually had to learn a lot of it recently, but my grandparents would only speak spanish to me as a baby. I'm about an 1/8th native american too... Taramarra.... i can't spell it... but they live in the Copper Canyon region... my great grandma who is still alive is half... so i'm 1/16th of that. I'm not going to apply to med school... maybe pt, ot or dentistry... but out of pure curiousity what's better... Native American or Mexican American? And can Native Americans from Mexico say they are Native American? Because THEY ARE!!! The natives in Mexico are very poor too for that matter. C'mon Mexico is America... and North America for that matter!

I'd be stoked to be anything that gave me URM status.

With the exception that I have to stay just as pretty as I am right now.
 
The law varies by state, if i recall correctly, about how to indicate your ethnicity (i.e. are you 1/2 or 1/4 or 1/8 or have a grandfather who was dutch..). I'm pretty sure 1/8 is still on solid legal ground to call yourself native american.

I am pretty sure it is your parents' grandparent needs to be full blooded. I think that is 1/16, but don't hold me to that.

Edit: Grandparents' grandparent would make you 1/16... I am really not sure now. It is one of the two...
 
I'm from oklahoma and we have LOTS of Native Americans here. My cousins are 1/8 Indian and they get free medical care, etc. I'm pretty sure that if you are Indian for medical purposes you are Indian for college purposes.
 
Despite the fact that MacGyver has since been banned for trolling, I believe the points he makes in this thread are accurate.

If you are considered a member of your tribe by
-the bureau of indian affairs
-your tribe

and can proide documentation from both sources, then you are entitled to the benefits extended to Native Americans, regardless of what percentage you are.

this and the degree to which you are involved in serving your community should be more than sufficient for any admissions committee.
 
it depends on what tribe you belong too. my wife is cherokee...can you say free college and law school....yes...free...wait...let me say that again...free

Down here in S. Fl the seminoles receive a monthly stipend from the casino and the reserve...($2,300 / month)

Wait...FREE college...

Got to belong to that tribe though...seminole is 1/16th...cherokee is 1/16th

Use it or lose it...

There were some rather bad attempts at humor posted in this thread before it was moved to this forum. Let's be gracious to the originator of the thread, and move past those and address our comments to his questions about whether his ancestry and ties to the culture will have any impact on his own college opportunities.

With the indian empowerment movement that started after the civil rights legislation, many tribes increased the fraction of blood (1/2, 1/4, etc) required to maintain tribal membership. I know a guy born in 63 that is considered non-indian to his tribe, while his 2 older brothers enjoy full membership just because they wear born before the tribe changed the membership requirements. I'd say if you have sufficient percentage to qualify as a member of the tribe you claim heritage to then there's no reason not to claim native american heritage. If not, it may be considered a stretch to claim such heritage, despite how true it is.
 
I don't see what you people are missing. I said I was involved in the native american community of course I'm registered with my tribe.

I feel you there. I'm 1/8 too I think...maybe 1/16 in which case I don;t think it'd do me much good anyways, but ya...my Grandmother was not registered in a tribe and apparently my family tried to get registered and everything but could not do it. They couldn't prove anything.

Hahahahahha... I am related to Prince Charles of Wales via his illegitimate child (my great x3 grandmother). hehe think I could get something for that? Maybe appeal to him for an inheritance? Lmao

Back to a more serious note, OP, I've looked into it too and you have to be registered in a tribe for it to do you any good.

I've been "involved" in the native american community and have no native blood in my heritage at all. So what we are missing are the details you left out.

Perhaps because of the history this country has had dealing with the legality of race.

Ever heard of the one-drop rule? Its a two-way street, imo.

For the record... yes, saying that you are native-american or mexican-american will increase your odds at acceptance to most universities. I would venture to guess native american more so, simply because there are fewer of them. Whether or not you should is entirely up to you.
 
Being native helps a lot! Say you want to go back to the reservation to help your community (it really works).

I'm mad because I'm the other Indian. Yeah, we Asians are reversely discriminated against a lot (perhaps even more than Caucasian people)
 
I know "Appalachians" who get full rides because they are from Appalachia even though their families have quite a bit of money. Personally it kind of annoys me when people cheat the system. To be honest, if you don't need the help, don't right down that you are a minority if you are 1/x % this or that. That's just me though.

You have eight great grandparents. If you know the heritage of them, you can deduce your own heritage down to eighths.

Does it help? Yes...dont push it, meaning with appearance...There is no "certain way" a group of people look.

Will it be enough to get you into yale with 1500/2400 SAT's and a 80 average? No, a person with those stats whose 1/8th will most likely not get in.

But since were saying you have "awesome stats", you have a good chance at the top schools, but its always going to come down to the same thing, luck. (this is when were talking about the top 20 - 30 schools)

Just emphasize on your applications the type of work and EC's you have/do, including being active in the Native American community, and it will help somewhat.

Good luck with your decisions.
