How to get the right people to write your LORS

I am going to start my MS1 at UCI and was interested in plastics. I was reading some of these posts and saw that an important aspect was getting the big name guys to write your LORs for residency programs. How do you get these people to write your LOR...would you need to seek them out to work in their labs or meet them during your clinical rotations? I knew how to get the big name people to write my med school LORs, but I get the feeling that the residency ones are different. Thanks
