How to get rid of acne scars?

So I went to my dermatologist the other day and asked if I should sign up for a chemical peel because I have acne scars on my face that I would like to get rid of. He said that there is really nothing that I can do, because a chemical peel will take the melanin out of my skin (because it goes down into the dermis) and I will have super white skin after that. He said that other dermatologists will give me bull crap and tell me what I want to hear but that he is practicing "real dermatology" and I will have to live with my acne scars. Is this really true? Is there any hope for my pitted face?? Thanks for your advice.
