Are you able to sign 1-year hospitalist contracts? Or do most typically have longer contracts? Especially in the North East (NJ, CT, NY).

Whats best route for someone trying to do a 1 year hospitalist job in a specific location?

Should be able to find a 1 year contract. In addition, all attending contracts have an "out". Typically with a notice period of 90 or 120 days. Only problem with leaving before the contract term is having to return the sign on bonus or relocation, which is not a huge deal if one has compelling enough reasons to leave. There are ways to reclaim the taxes paid on it as well.

Doesn't matter if it's more than a year, as just about any will let you leave after a specified notice time (usually between 3-6 months) even if the contract isn't up. As mentioned above sign on bonuses will likely have to be repaid, but would push to have it prorated in the contract so you keep part of it.

Also, would not go into hospitalist job with mindset that you're only staying there for 1 year, unless your plan is a transitional job between residency and fellowship.
