I'm an NJ high school senior pretty set on medicine deciding between the following:

Rutgers-NB (25k/year)
- Pros: close to home, lots of research/clinical opportunities, amazing diversity, active student life
- Cons: no personalized attention, highly competitive
TCNJ (35k/year)
- Pros: close to home, decent diversity, personalized attention, less competitive
- Cons: minimal research opportunities, less active student life
Seton Hall-Hackensack Meridian (40k/year)
- Pros: Joint Bachelors/MD (only guarantees interview, 3.6 and 510 requirement), personalized attention, less competitive
- Cons: minimal research opportunities, less active student life, low diversity

If you can get into Rutgers, go for it. Apply to all, really, and see where you get in. If you get into all three, go for Rutgers. It's cheaper, has a great name brand attached to it, and it's aesthetically pleasing. Also, apply to Princeton (just for fun). Don't worry about "competitive" atmosphere. Do your best, don't compare yourself to others, and be nice to others. :)
