So when I signed my HPSP I signed up for 3 years active and 5 years IRR. I am thinking about joining the Guard or Reserves for a few years and was wondering if it is possible to do only 2 or 3 years in the Guard/Reserves and then switch over to the IRR for the remainder of the 8 year total obligation. Or do you have to stay in the Guard/ drilling Reserves for the whole 5 years? I asked the Guard recruiter, but he didn't know the answer.

Thanks

yes, you can join the guard for just a couple years, then finish out the remainder of the IRR time actually in IRR.

unless you sign up for some type of bonus with a service requirement, you sign on for an indefinite period of time, unlike enlisted, who must sign for a pre-specified amount of time.
