I just want to get your opinion on who have been good visiting professors. We have had some big names, and it became clear that not everyone famous can teach. Could you give us some recommendations on who to invite?

I'll start by listing some of the visiting professors we really liked. I've divided people by oral board categories...

CNS/PEDS
- Shiao Woo (MDACC)

THX/Sarc

GI
- Chris Crane (MDACC)

GU
- Anthony D'Amico (Harvard)
- Allan Polack (Fox Chase)

Gyn

Lymphoma
- Chul Ha (San Antonio, basic lymphoma nomenclature, very helpful)

H+N
- Robert Amdur (Florida, went through neck levels, not oral board style, but very helpful)

Breast
- Lori Pierce (Michigan)

Bill Regine (Maryland) was also very good for brain met mgmt.

I would have to second both Dr. Amdur for head/neck and Dr. Regine for CNS/GI. I thought they were excellent teachers and nice people. Though, I had a follow up question for Dr. Amdur that he never responded to ...

I think that, like undergrad, the best teachers in rad-onc may not be the most published/famous people in the field. They might be the friendly junior faculty next door that can break down stuff in a way that make sense clinically/practically and gives you pearls for the boards.

Wow. You guys have more visiting profs than we do.

A couple others that come to mind, based on first-hand exposure:

CNS
-Minesh Mehta (Wisc): Pretty much the best teacher I've ever known, in addition to being a nice guy.
-John Suh (CC): Had him for visiting prof 2 years ago; did very well

Sarc
-Brian O'Sullivan (PMH): Was just here last week, and did a great job with both sarcoma and head and neck.

Gyn
-Arno Mundt (SD): I've only seen him for the ASTRO educational sessions, but if they're any indication, he'd be a great visiting prof
(Simul, I'm tempted to nominate Sushil "The Human Perez" Beriwal here; whaddya think?)

Thoracic
-Bob Timmerman (UTSW): Oops, he wouldn't be visiting for you, Clint. Again, my experience with him is confined to ASTRO, but I was very favorably impressed.

H&N
-Bill Mendenhall (UF)/Paul Harari (Wisc): My former and current mentors. Both outstanding teachers/speakers, and overall good guys.

Breast
-David Wazer (Tufts)/Frank Vicini (Beaumont): Both are primarily known for their work in APBI, but both are excellent speakers on the subject.

I think "Human Perez" would be excellent, as well, for gyn/breast. Heck, for any subject. And, if he was a visiting professor, you would have the bonus of not getting pimped without mercy like we do :)

Dr. John Kalapurukal (sp?) for peds - I thought he was very good this past ASTRO and a nice man.

Dr. John Flickinger/Dr. Kondziolka for GammaKnife/CNS. Dr. K is a Nsurgeon, but does much of the teaching at the GK course and is excellent.

Visiting professorship is one of the real strengths of my program. This academic year alone, we've had five so far; Drs. Pierce, Amdur, D'Amico, Woo, and Mauch, with Dr. Glatstein coming next week.

Dr. Timmerman can teach CNS, peds, H+N (for anatomy, etc. pre-IMRT era), thoracic (SBRT), and testicular ca. He is an amazing teacher.

We had Dr. Vicini two years ago, and he was apparently very good. I was too green that things he said kinda went over my head...

FWIW- Carlos Perez is actually a human himself (I think).

Yeah, but with all due respect to Dr. Perez, I'd lay good odds that Sushil knows the contents of his tome better than he does.:)

Breast- Abram Recht or Jennifer Bellon (Both were great)
GI- Lisa Kachnic (Great teacher, excellent presentation)
Gyn-Arno Mundt (Excellent talk on IMRT for GYn)
H&N- Nancy Lee (Engaging, great technical points)

Amdur is good just so you can see what he does for H&N boards. He's a challege.

If you must restrict Dr. Timmerman to a body site, he's more of a CNS/Peds guy than a thorax guy.

Really though, he's an SBRT guy, any site.

Dr. D'Amico came yesterday and was absolutely fantastic. Dynamic lecturer and the time spent with us was extremely useful, especially oral boards stuff. Very personable, and spent a fair amount of time discussing 'the softer side' - work/life balance, etc. You Harvard guys are lucky to have him.

I guess there is a great story of him taking on two attackers at once in West Philly.

I added Lederman and Fuks to the list based on this earlier post. Was it supposed to be a joke? (I'm kind of thick...)

Based on that story, Lederman is quite a character ... Maybe he would be a good visiting prof, at least on a talk about strategic/innovative marketing :)
