Here's an update on my app process: 37 apps submitted (app complete except for 1 LOR + mspe), 5 categorical invites (unfortunately none from California programs). It seems that most programs only offer interviews on Fridays or Saturdays. Given the length of the interview season I guess this limits one's potential to not much more than 10-12 total interviews attended.

I would like to do the same thing. Problem right now is with only two interviews offered out of 32 programs applied to, I cannot accept my current interviews without waiting for others to plan trips accordingly. Did others also wait? Will schools take offense if you make them wait for your interview acceptance? If yes, hopefully I won't have to wait much longer.
 
I started out with two interview invites - one in the south and one in the northeast. I picked the dates that set these two the furthest apart and now I'm filling in the space with the other interview invites I've been getting. One problem I've notice is that 5 of the 6 programs I've received invites from interview on Fridays, so it is kind of difficult to cluster the interviews into regions at this point.

If you're applying to a competitive field, it behooves you to accept all interviews as soon as possible - many of these spots fill up within the first 24 hours of receiving the invite email.

I submitted my application on Sept 2nd, applied to 50 programs, and have 12 interviews to date. I'm by no means the top of my class nor do I have amazing board schools (I haven't taken step 2 yet). So maybe it's too early for this, but I'm starting to worry. I thought I was a solid candidate and applied to mostly competitive programs. I had a 255 on step 1, a mix of HP and honors on rotations (honors in surgery), research with 1 publication and 1 submitted abstract, and letters that should be good. However, my only interviews are from uconn, christiana and maine (which don't really fit the 7 year academic program I was looking for) and baylor, which I thought was a reach. Several of the places I applied have given out interviews (emory, dartmouth, unc,uva, carolinas) but I haven't heard anything from these places. Does this mean I won't be hearing from them? Did I overestimate how competitive I am? Anyone have any words of wisdom?

I submitted on 9/4, was complete 9/17 except for transcript (which was submitted 9/29) and MSPE.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. You're app sounds far more competitive than mine, and I've gotten plenty of interviews. Your completion and transcript dates are probably just going to push you into the next round of interview offers for some programs.

Okay,
So I applied to 30 residency spots. I've got 13 interviews already. Some of them have started to overlap regardless of handy-chart I created, as some residency coordinators tell me the date vs. let me pick. I'm starting to panic (happy panic?) about whether I should go to all of them? How do I choose which ones to decline since I haven't been to most of these programs to determine whether I fit/or if they're good programs? Should I decline any at all? I applied to lower end and mid-range academic programs as well as 2-3 community programs. Should I apply to more dream schools?

Any advice would be good.
