Fellowship interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I actually applied last year to Mayo, AZ, and they sent an email back stating they would not interview psychiatrist. I think this is some sort of violation, but that is the email I got....

I have also recently "heard" - and I can't really verify this - that both the Mayo Fl & AZ programs really only consider internal anesthesia applicants. While everyone is welcome to apply, you may spend the time more wisely as their application takes some extra effort. Its up to you if you think its worth it.

Im a physiatrist and interviewed at Mayo, AZ. Cush program. I dont even think you take call..... They took a physiatrist a couple years before me if I remember correctly.

The current Mayo Jax pain fellow is PM&R from Mayo Rochester.

Anybody get invites from West Coast programs like UCLA or East Coast programs like BIDMC?

I only heard from U of Michigan. I was told it was good, but then told whatever. Hard to grasp which ones are good besides Brigham and Cleveland Clinic.

Harvard/Spaulding is dropping their pain fellowship? Permanently?

Unfortunately, it's true...unless that was their way of blowing me off.

The ACGME requirements are too extensive for pain programs at stand-alone facilities to comply with (15 IV lines, 15 intubations on actual patients, psych full mental status exams, etc).

are we in the middle of interview season now? so far of the close to 20 progs applied to i've received about 5 interviews. im feeling like things are starting to slow down since its been over a week since i've heard of anything from anyone.

anyone else in the same boat and feelin a bit antsy?

relax...some of the best programs dont extend interviews out until late July, early August. Additionally, people will 'drop' less tiered programs once they've interviewd at better ones and have gotten offers.

After that (mid august), yes start being worried.

nyu also sent out interviews

People, think about it. July is when all the new interns, residents, fellows start. Add the medical students on their rotations, and this makes it even more busy for the staff. I concur with one of the guys above. Most of the good programs don't start sending out interview offers until August.

I'm headed to UCLA/WLA-VA (PM&R) this Wed/Thurs, then to Stanford Fri, and back down to SoCal to UCI on Mon.

Several qestions:
(1) Is it true that the offers tend to be made end-of-August/early-September? (1.5) Has anybody signed a contract yet?

(2) Has anybody heard from Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Wash?

(3) Or from UC-San Francisco?

Hope to see some of you on the interview trail ;p

I signed a letter of intent. No official contract yet.

wow its the end of july and already letters of intent being signed.. ****tin in my pants now havent even started interviewing yet...

If it makes you feel better, it was my home program. I signed around April. Couldn't be happier.

I signed in April with a program that I have been in contact with for the past year, so I don't think this is typical. I would not even come close to worrying at this time.

so what does the letter of intent actually mean? thanks.

It is basically a positive response to their offer of acceptance. It is an agreement that expresses your intent to join their program, but it is short of a contract.

Has anyone heard from any programs this week? If so, where? Interviews, offers, rejections...?

Rejections from UT Southwestern and Dartmouth (filled now) this week

I am not sure it would be wise to try to "rank" these. All these programs have strengths no one will deny. They decidedly also have apparent (or not so apparent) weaknesses and to assign a value to these is near impossible. At least it is for me. What matters is that all these programs are good, reputable, and will likely teach you good medicine. The best for you will be that program fits your personality and your career goals. I know this isn't the answer you were looking for, but I can't offer a better answer at this time.

Yare missing a few of the 'better programs on this list".

Hi, Long time, first time:

Has anyone heard from Mass General or Brigham & Women's yet? Would it be ok to email the Programs? I see that BI Deaconess sent out interview rejection emails. Was just wondering

Yes its okay to email or call programs for an update every couple of weeks. Why wouldn't it be? Hounding them everyday would certainly be annoying but an update every few weeks, whats wrong with that? I've been doing it, as tactfully as possible. Some have ignored me, some have notified me I'm out, one gave me an interview. Its torture just waiting. It also shows that you're interested in that program.

Heard from Cleveland Clinic and MGH today. Supposedly B&W to offer to non-Boston area residents any time now (Boston folks have already interviewed).

Thus far, 4 interviews and 1 offer with deadline approaching...

I'm breaking this into 2 lists, since this is a rolling process where some programs are to the point of giving offers and some haven't even sent out interview invites yet:

List 1) Programs that have sent out interview invites, and

List 2) Programs that have offered positions.

Help us out. If you've had, or know of someone who's had an offer, cut and paste the program into this list and post it (also, please make a note if any program is known to be filled):
