DO Match List 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Where were the 6 rads matches, IMDoc607? I didn't think many ACGME rads programs were DO friendly.

The majority of our Rads matches were in Philly and Wilmington, DE. Very DO friendly in the NJ, PA, DE region.

someone post up those legendary PCOM matches

Anybody have KCOM's?? Unofficial or otherwise?

Members don't see this ad :)
I like how people on here refer to ACGME residencies under the "allopathic" umbrella, like they're all the same, and all are better than all AOA and dual progams.

I have a friend who matched in PCOM General surgery program with a high likelyhood of getting into plastics.

One urology match that I know of....Albert Einstein in Pa

So wait. So far, without all the match lists in, we have TWO DOs matching allo derm?

Can anyone provide 2010 Match info for WVSOM?

Can you match Gastroenterology without an IM residency?? I thought it was a fellowship

That feedback on Nova's is cool. It's also interesting to know that some people flat out put AOA derm, which means that they most likely got it via some unofficial thing when matching their internship at that hospital, and to see a few IM/derm matches. This year really dispels the DOs can't go into derm myth.

Lecom-erie, anyone?
This is the results of the AOA match for both Brandenton (B) and Erie (E)

KCUMB would be nice :xf:

Nothing formal is out yet - even then, the list is only those that volunteer their matches. It's in the works. If you are really curious, there is a group on facebook showing all the matches people volunteered.

To those of you interested in TCOM's list, according to the admissions guy on the Facebook page the list will not be officially available until after graduation (May, I think). So, unless someone finds an unofficial one, we'll be waiting a while.

Hey ya'll, I'm new to SDN and trying to translate the jargon and SDN vernacular...

So, my question:

What is 'scramble'? Does this refer to the process for those who didn't match?

Thanks! :D

Correct, the scramble is what all those who are unmatched are a part of where they are "scrambling" trying to get into any of the left over spots that went unfilled.

Totals: Matched (includes Military) – 143

So 23 people at MSU-COM didn't match anywhere? Is that right? Isn't that number awfully high?

Probably a fair amount of people who ranked a low amount in the osteo match with plans of matching in the allo match. Though I have no idea how to judge that because MSUCOM doesn't post an allopathic match list.

23 unmatched? I can see a few people getting overconfident but this is something bigger than bad judgement. Not a good sign at all.

What is the difference between AOA and allo Neurosurgery residency? Do you obtain all the same certifications and basically do the samething OR can you only practice at certain hospitals with AOA?

(I heard about something like this with gas docs)

A neurosurgeon is a neurosurgeon. Cmon man, this has to be a bull**** question...

So not a single Western/COMP senior matched into USC's medicine program? That seems weird given recent history. I recall seeing loads of USC matches in the 2009, 2008, 2007, etc match lists.

It isn't, check out the anesthesiology forum. On SDN, at least, it seems most attendings feel the ACGME accredidation is the gold standard. I believe this user was asking whether this type of thing exists for neurosurgery.

Yeah, I'm not BS'ing. I just heard that gas docs needed special accreditation... just was curious about DO.

I'm not a DO hater, I'm applying to 5 DOs!

Also, then would a DO have more opportunities to match Neurosurgery since they can match either AOA or ACGME?

I have heard of this as well. I do not know about neurosurgeons though it would not surprise me if it was a similar situation.

I have noticed some people here have a degree of optimism that makes them think MDs and DOs share all the same opportunities. Some comments in this thread try to put a positive spin on the current match results which in reality are scary.

DOs have a harder time getting competitive MD residencies. If they do an AOA residency they will not have as many job opportunities. In medicine your prospects overwhelmingly depend on your training.

Want to provide some evidence? I remember the thread in question in which someone asked about anesthesia DO residencies...and the consensus is that it doesn't matter (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=681932&highlight=DO+gold+standard&page=2) with one poster arguing that DO residencies/students/etc are inferior. I'm not trying to argue your point, but would you clarify your assertion that DOs have a harder time getting competitive residencies or getting job offers?

With respect to your point on competitive residencies, they are by definition hard to match in to regardless of where you're coming from. I understand that if you have two identical students, one being from a DO school in Idaho and the other being from Harvard, the guy from Harvard has a much higher likelihood of matching into a particular residency. However, no two students are alike...when reading someones ERAS/their personal statement, in addition to conducting an in-person interview, the differences between students are immense. Stronger students tend to be strong applicants...but are you contesting that a particular educational setting inherently gives you an advantage/disadvantage? I can't see very many programs directors saying "I will only look at students from schools X Y and Z" or "I refuse to look at students from schools A B and C".

In terms of job opportunities, data from the BLS, Cejka and MH suggests that there is a current shortage of physicians across the board and that the most sought after positions are in urban areas. Can you explain how/why DOs experience worse job opportunities? I should think that ones work ethic, personality, history of malpractice suits, experience, references as well as a myriad of other factors would take more precedence.

Thanks in advance.

This year definitely did not conform to the previous trends, nobody really knows why. Instead, it looks like about half of LLU's incoming IM class is going to be from Western. Shrug...

Lends more credence to the lack of transitivity between classes of a medical school than anything else. A lot of students may have just wanted ACGME IM..

Well and a lot did want ACGME IM, which is why we have a lot going to LLU (ACGME IM). The previous trend was that a lot of Western grads were going to USC (ACGME IM). I personally know about a half dozen people who had ranked USC IM > LLU IM, but this year nobody is going to USC and instead many are going to LLU.

Although its true that the desires of each class are different, a lot of my classmates are wondering if USC just had a different approach to their ROL this year.

I read in the anesthesia forum that there were several really good allo anesthesia matches- Hopkins, UMich, UMiami, several at Henry Ford, UWash at Seattle. 11 matches total (3 went with AOA spots).

Also, it should be noted that the "Unmatched" number does not necessarily reflect people who had to scramble, it means that that most, if not all, of those people applied AOA and ACGME but decided not to rank any AOA spots.
