Hello,

I am not a medical student. I work with electronics and programming. A friend of mine was hospitalized a month ago and it took about a week to discover he had Rockey Mountain Spotted Fever. They took many samples for analysis prior to diagnosis. I was surprised it took a week, however I do not know the steps or checklists involved in these processes.

I know it's possible to design a microscope with a camera feed to image recognition software. It could then compare the live feed to known bacteria or viruses or "dangerous" cells (can you tell I'm not a doctor?) just like finger print and facial recognition software.

My question is, would such a system be practical? I recognize this would be an involved project. I do not want to pursue it if there are better solutions already available. If this could be beneficial, in what aspect or field would it be of most benefit?

Thank you for your time.
