We don't hear too much info on CSPM on these forums. I'm just curious what things drew you to the school over other pod schools. How is the location of the school itself? Do they seem financially stable and such now? (I heard of some problems a few years back with the merger). Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

Hello...I'll be joining you guys this upcoming fall. Anyone thought about where to live in the Oakland area yet? I figure it's not too early to start searching and have heard good things about the Lake Merritt area. Anyone interested in sharing a 2 bedroom apartment in the area?

Lis.

Hi Bryan
What drew me to CSPM.. first of all location. I'm from the bay area (great weather). I really liked the small class size. The facilities were very nice. During the interview everyone was very nice and helpful. I really liked the program and I found myself most comfortable at CSPM. One of the major factors in deciding which school to choose was the comfort factor. I can totally see myself there. The curriculum and early exposure to clinical was another factor. The school has a great location, the didactic learning takes place on the Oakland Campus ( the nice part of Oakland) and clinical is in San Francisco which is only 20 minutes away. Traffic isnt that bad. They do seem financially stable now and their board pass rates are going up. I asked that question during my interview and they admitted to have troubles in the past when they merged with Samuel Merritt.. one of the reasons for merging with Samuel Merritt was for financially stability. I was told that things have gotten better and they are financial stable and the passing rates are increasing. I hope that helps:oops:
sorry for any typos and grammatical errors

oops wrong thread

anyone else got any info on this school? I have applied and would like more info.

thanks:)

I just finished my interview at Cali. It was really great. I liked the campus and the students. The restaurant that I went to for lunch was really good

They offered me a seat in the class of 2011. :) I don't know about a scholarship or not. I may have missed the deadline. But it would be great if they offered me one. Anything to cut down on the cost of attendance.

Anyway, I know that this is going to be a tough decision for me. I still have other interviews to attend so I will have to think long and hard about the pros and cons of each school.

Do you know how many seats are still open for the CALI school?

My family's planning on moving off the east coast to the middle of the country, so I've been considering applying to the Cali school because it's not going to be that far away when I matriculate. The only reason I wasn't going to apply was the distance away from family, so I didn't even really look that deep into the school itself. (I know, dumb on my part. ) So far, I really like what I've seen/heard from their site and talking to the pods I shadowed. Now I'm behind the curve and had a few questions more related to the location rather than the school itself. I've seen some peeps from Cali (the school and the state) in the board sometimes, so maybe you all can help out.

Do they have on-campus housing at the Cali School? I heard that the cost of living was pretty high in that area. Is Oakland as high to live as SF? Are there cities that are close by and cheaper to live or is all of Cali expensive to live? I've never been that far west, so it'd be nice to hear about the hidden costs with living in the city. Do the fin aid packages from the Cali school take into consideration the cost of living, and would living on-campus make any sort of dent on how much debt I'm going to have anyway? Sorry about hijacking the thread, but I didn't think it was necessary to make a new one for my lame questions.:D

Lis.

i've been apartment hunting as well. I dont think i'll be living in oakland mainly cuz of the rough atmosphere...but im pretty sure that are decent affordable neighborhoods...i was thinkin of living in the surrounding areas like in berkeley or emeryville (only 10 minutes away from campus at most). but i'll keep in mind that ur looking to share a 2 bedroom apartment if you haven't found somebody to live with by july.

yeah, i read up on all the financial stuff that was going on before the merger with samuel merrits college..

but i think it was a good move cuz it seems to me that they're stable and even better now. cuz samuel merrits college (the oakland campus) is a very high tech campus..no doubt about that.. and the DPM students share facilities with MSN, BSN, accelerated BSN, OT, PT, and PA students as well. I met up with first year students and they were already cutting up cadavers. when i went there for my interview..i was impressed cuz it seemed like the school itself was its own hospital (correct me if im wrong). They also have the best dormitories that i have ever seen in my life although I am not gonna live on campus. The girls are hot...even the ones in the brochures are hot lol.

I chose this school cuz of the convenience of being so close to home . the weather over here is just awesome...we have the best summer nights... not humid..not too hot..just perfect. cost of living kinda sux here but if you have a spouse that works in the bay area, the wages here are pretty high compared to other regions in the country to accomodate for the high cost of living (but don't take my word for it...cuz maybe im just a lucky dude)

the first 2 years of schooling will be on the oakland campus ...and the last 2 years will be done at the San Francisco campus (not quite sure).

Holy crap, this is cheap. i might have a change in plans. THANKS SATTIKARIYA!!

When I emailed CSPM two weeks ago they told me there are 29 seats filled (meaning they received a deposit) and they aim for a class size of 40 and will accept ~49 people max.

I am happy and proud to say I will be a part of the CSPM incoming class this fall 2007!!!!

I was so nervous because when I interviewed (last week) they said they only were accepting around 4-10 more people (almost at their cap) and despite what people reported on SDN, they didn't give me a same day acceptance, I had to wait 5 days before they let me know about their decision!

I'm guessing they probably rejected others in my group I interviewed with and they didn't want to accept/reject everyone together, to avoid making people feel awkward.

yeah, CSPM was the only school that made me wait till the end of the week after my interview and we had to go through a lot of interviewers.

anyway, CONGRATS DUDE!!

Where is everyone from?

I think ive mentioned before that i'm from San Jose

could never imagine leaving California

I am finishing my undergrad at UCI, but before that I lived around San Jose also. CSPM was my first choice because my family is right by there, plus I absolutely love the bay area =)

Congrats to you all!! Question to Satti, did you apply to any of the east coast schools? OCPM/TEMPLE/NYCPM etc?

Hello all,
It seems that a good number of you guys going to CSPM chose the school mainly based on its location (you already live in california, have family around the area, etc). I don't mean to generalize at all but thats what I have gained from this thread and some people I talked to on SDN. Do you think this is the case? I'm just curious if you guys looked at/interviewed at other podiatry schools as well? I read on the school website that half the class is "out of state." If you don't mind me asking, what were your main points on picking this school over others?

Do you guys know how things work between the oakland and san fran campuses? For example, will you only be going to the oakland campus for your first year? However, for your 2nd and 3rd years, will one have to commute from oakland to san fran for classes, clinic, etc? Do you know if they have specific clinic days and lecture days your 3rd year (ex: MWF clinic days, Tues and Thurs lecture days)? I believe OCPM used to have their 3rd year program split up with lecture mornings/clinic afternoons vice versa which can be a hassle for commuting. They changed the system and told me it was going to be certain days for lectures and certain days for clinics which makes commuting easier (starting next year). Are most of you guys planning on living in San Francisco and commuting to school or living in oakland? I heard there was a BART stop right in front of the school but please correct me if I'm wrong! Could it be feasible to live in San Fran and take the train across the bay? By the way, how is the area of Oakland that Samuel Merritt is located? I've heard things ranging from "ghetto" to "the nice part of Oakland." I'm interested to hear what you all have to say about this.

Also, I'm curious about the 4th year at CSPM. I read you can pick a number of sites around the country (6 I believe) to do 8 months of rotations. This seems to be an interesting system for the 4th year. If you talked to any senior students, do they like this system? Anywho, does this mean that you only get to do 4 externships outside of the "core rotations." I just am comparing to some schools like Des Moines where one does a 4 month core pretty much anywhere in the US and then has around 7 externships available. Did you guys consider this when picking CSPM? I'm guessing you do your externships first and then the core rotation but I may be wrong.

Overall, I am definitely interesting in applying to CSPM this fall. It seems to be strong clinically and I heard you begin clinics in the 2nd year. The cost of living may be crappy but I am from Long Island which is pretty terrible as well (I'm used to it  ). The bay area is really cool so it does not matter so much I guess. Also, The small class size sounds very nice as well. Do you guys believe the school is stable financially after their merger with Samuel Merritt? Let me know your opinions on this please.

Sorry for all of the questions!!! I am pretty interested in the school but cannot seem to get that much info on SDN (makes sense as the class size is quite small). Thanks for all of your help and good luck with everything!

Sorry for the late reply. Work has been crazy. Location was definitely a factor but no the sole reason why I choose CSPM. I applied to 6 other schools which were AZPOD, CPSM, NYCPM, Barry, Scholls and NYCPM. I got an invite to interview at every school. My main points on picking CSPM were location, the faculty and curriculum. I was unsure of CSPM until I interviewed. Everyone was nice, but niceness is determining factor. I really liked the clinic. The faculty and facilities were welcoming and it was place where I found myself to be most comfortable. The curriculum and early exposure to clinical was another factor. The school has a great location, the didactic learning takes place on the Oakland Campus (the nice part of Oakland) and clinical is in San Francisco which is only 20 minutes away. Traffic isn’t that bad.

You spend the first year in Oakland. The second year you split between SF and Oakland. I think its 3 days of classes and 2 days of clinical. I believe third year is-4 days of clinical and 1 day for classes. You would have to commute from Oakland and San Francisco. The commute isn’t so bad, it all depends if you get stuck in rush hour or not. For the first year I plan on living in Oakland, Samuel Merritt has relatively cheap graduate housing which I’ve posted on here. There is BART station nearby the school and it is very feasible to live in SF and commute to Oakland. I met a lot of 2nd and 3rd year students whoa re doing that. The area Oakland around Samuel Merritt isn’t that bad. Yes Oakland does range from ghetto to nice. The campus is pretty close to Piedmont which a pretty nice area if you wanted to live there. I have friends going to Samuel Merritt and they’ve never had a problem in the area.
You do your externships first then the core rotations.
http://www.samuelmerritt.edu/podiatric_medicine/curriculum
During my interview I asked about the financial stability of the school. They admitted to financial instability in the past. That was one reason why they merged with Samuel Merritt. They aid things have picked and they are now financially stable and the board pass rates are increasing.
Another reason why I choose the school was how the students’ feedback is valued. I talked to the 3 rd year students and they said in the past they had some crappy professors and the student were pretty unhappy about it. CSPM fired those professors and brought new people who have been doing a great job. The small class size definitely rocks.
One reason why you can’t find much info of SDN about CSPM is that CSPM keeps you pretty busy. Your first semester is 20 units, the following second semester is 24 units. All your time is spent studying.:D

Sorry for any grammatical errors and typos

I hope that helped

Thanks a lot for the response! I really appreciate it. It is very nice to hear your opinions on the school. I will definitely apply to CSPM in the fall.

Did you interview at all the schools you applied to? I'm just curious what you thought made CSPM stand out more than the other places (for ex: AZPOD).

Also, any idea how many externships you are allowed to do? The obvious seemed to be 4 since you have 8 months of a core rotation. Do you know how much of a choice one has in choosing their core rotation? Is it a random lottery system, point system based on class rank, etc?

How long would you say it takes from the Lake Merritt BART station (I'm guessing its the closest station to the school) to the general downtown areas of San Fran?

Is there a decent amount of research opportunities available for students at CSPM?

Have you lost many students from your class since the beginning of the fall?

Thanks again for your help. Good luck with all of your classes!

Oh I wont be starting until this fall:D I only interviewed at Barry. My visit to CSPM had me sold. I was supposed to interview at NYCPM AND AZPOD a week later but came down with the flu and cancelled. I felt CSPM was for me and didnt need to look around. A part of me now sort of wishes that I hadnt cancelled all my interviews and but overall I feel like I made the right choice:thumbup:

The bart ride from lake merritt to general parts of SF is about 20 minutes. My brain is bit frazzled right now. So questions regarding externships, core rotations, and research could be best anwsered by Dr. Tran. I'll PM his email address.

Hey. So how's the housing situation. I'll be in the bay area in a week and want to get a jump start on looking for a place. Have u decided where to live yet? And what are your roommate plans?

OK, i think the person that i was suppose to be rooming with bailed out on me. I might take up your offer. you mind living with a guy?? let me know!

I just got accepted this Wednesday the 30th of May. I was offered admission on the spot right after my interview. Apparently the class wasn't full yet (on Wednesday) but it was getting very close, so David told me. I too went to UCI, I was class of 2006. I chose CSPM also because of its location. I live in Southern CA but I can easily drive back and forth if I want to and the faculty and students really impressed me. I also like the fact that they begin clinical rotations 2nd year as well as their small class size. Congrats to everyone else who got in.

I've finally made my desicion, I will be a part of the CSPM Class of 2011 as well. Looking forward to meeting you all. Congrats everyone

I guess you had changed your mind about coming to TUSPM. Good luck at CSPM.

Thanks DPMGRAD, I researched and researched and weighed in all the +/-'s and after a long time of debate with myself I felt CSPM served me slightly better. Thanks for all your help with answering my questions it was very helpful.

Wow, sorry for being late...been super busy. Thanks to Sattikariya (spelling?) i decided to go for oncampus housing. It is a lot cheaper than i imagined. I currently do not have a back up plan but if it doesnt work out, I would probably move in with my gf who happens to live in richmond.

Good luck on finding what you were lookin for.

Looking forward to meeting all of you in 2 weeks!!!

I'm starting my 3rd year at CSPM this fall. A great place to live is on Treasure Island, especially for 2nd year, but also good for 1st year if you don't want to live on campus. The rent is less expensive than most other places. It is quiet with no gas stations or grocery stores on the island. Great view. Also, it would be best to get some roommates who would share the toll ($4.00) back across the bay bridge. So there are pros & cons but is overall a decent deal.

Hello there. First of all, relax. If you've done your share of shadowing (do at least a few months) you've already got an edge.. You can use your podiatrist for the letter of recs as well so dont forget that. Also, take advantage of the pre-professional internships they offer every winter break in any of the schools..just turn in the applications before deadline. This will give you a chance to possibly shadow students doing their rotations and possibly see some surgeries. I did the one week pre-professional internship in Ohio during the winter break of my senior year and had my interview for admission in California the week after. It helped me out a lot when my interviewers asked about my shadowing experiences.

If you dont have a 3.5 gpa, try to do your best on the MCAT...generally, if your gpa is pretty good and your transcripts show that you've taken some challenging course loads...ur MCAT scores doesn't have to be great...aiming for 23-24 is just fine.

One admission officer told me that he didn't have to question me on my academics because it's already printed on my transcript. If there is a trend of consistency and potential to do better..i think they'll consider it. If there is an odd case where you have an A one semester and a C the next semester..give them a good reason if they ask during your interview.

If you're ever offered an interview, ask as many questions as you can before you actually get interviewed...so that when the interviewer ask you if you have any questions...you can say that all your questions have been answered. just show them that you're a normal, confident, and outgoing person..

i want to mention a good place to live is vallejo ...that is if you dont mind trying to beat traffic before class and paying $4 bridge toll every morning. I'm currently renting out a room from this lady's house for a flat fee...the price beats the on campus cost.. Takes roughly 20 mins (30 at most)...i dont mind all of the hassle since i've only been doing this every day for the past few months to get to work AND im on the fasttrak plan.

Anyway, i've met some of you already during the luau. Two more weeks till orientation!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey all you CSPM students, i was just wondering what your GPA's and MCAT's were and how many people got rejected. I have a 3.35 Science GPA and a 3.7 non-science GPA. I have a 28 Q on my MCATT and have alot of research experience and shadowed a podiatrist all summer. What are my chances of getting in. What were your profiles...anything you can answer would be great. Thanks. I really want to go to CSPM.

Hey, I'm a 3rd year student at CSPM. I can't tell you how many people were rejected only because I don't know, and I'd rather not tell you my profile on here. But I can tell you it was no where near as impressive as yours. I would say your chances of getting are above average to pretty good.:) But I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you get an interview, just be yourself, be sure this is where you really want to be and the profession you want to get into, and everything will work itself out.

I hope the orientation went well with you all today =).
If you guys want to get to know some faculty members and members from class 2009 and 2010, come to the softball tournament on 09/08/07.
It will be a good opportunity for you all to ask some of us about tips for classes and professors, and play some balls as well.
Hope to see you there~!
