Current M3 looking into PM&R and searched previous threads for this but couldn't get a clear answer. I checked the NRMP stats and noticed many PM&R positions that were offered and filled were as a PGY2. What does that mean? Do you apply to transitional year programs and apply into PM&R during your transitional year instead, I just don't get the point of that, plus what if you don't match AFTER you do a transitional year- isn't that a risk?

There are both 4-year combined PM&R programs as well as 3-year advanced programs (after an intern prelim or transitional year). During your M4 year, you apply to and interview at both advanced PM&R programs and transitional/prelim programs. When it comes time to order your rank list, there is a primary list for PM&R programs and a supplemental list for the intern programs. All weight is given to your primary list, so if you do not match at any of the advanced programs, you will not be matched to a program on the supplemental list. This is why some people also will put a TY/prelim program at the end of the primary list just in case, so that they will at least match to a PGY1 program and have an intern year plan that is set (though there are risks w/ this as well). Hope that clarifies things a bit.
