Hi all, currently a PGY1 DO resident at a community IM program. 230/237 step 1/2. I will start doing research soon and some EC. If I have some research and do well i residency what are my chances of matching into any heme/onc program? I have a 2 week heme/onc elective soon and will work hard in that rotation.

Do I have to have publications, etc?
Thanks.

Heme/Onc is a competitive fellowship but still behind GI and Cards. Being a DO and from a community program will be more difficult but not impossible if you just want a spot somewhere. In the 2021 match, 64 DO's matched (but doesnt say how many DO's applied): https://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/SMS_Result_and_Data_2021.pdf. You can also look at the data from charting the outcomes 2018 which shows average step scores broken down for MD/DO/IMG along with average research: https://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/2018-Charting-Outcomes-SMS.pdf . You can probably assume its slightly more competitive now though as this was for 2018. Does your program have a heme/onc fellowship to be able to make connections? Bottom line: network, do research, get good letter of rec, be chief if available, pass/do well on Step 3.
