Just curious. I would be interested in doing some short term (~2-3 years) work down under, and maybe possibly longer but was wondering if there would be other requirements to meet. If i were to do this, it would probably be after completing a US residency (most likely Emerg. Med). Can anyone give me some good info on this type of thing. Thanks!

Also, can anyone comment on the general job market for physicians down in australia? What about the outlook towards Americans (sorry if this is an ignorant question)?

It is definitely possible to do fellowships in Australia. You don't need to sit any exams & the red tape is much less than for aussies doing fellowships in the US.

The Queensland government actively recruits UK doctors to fill residency spots every yr, so it would be easy to get one of those spots I imagine.
you could look at

There is lots of work over here, especially if you want to work outside of the capital cities. Smaller rural hospitals are always looking for emergency and other ward positions. usually to get a work visa over here you have to be sponsored by a hospital and depending upon the type of medical registration that you recieve they (the goverment) will set limitations to where you can work... I worked with an American doc who had just finished his Emergency med training and had worked in several regions and it wasn't a problem but he did need sponsorship by each hospital. While there are a number of locum agencies over here I have dealt with "Last Minute Locums"(http://www.lml.com.au/) several times. It is run by a fellow American and she can sort out any questions you would have. Hope this helps,

Recently returned from Australia - why do you call it Oz? Never did find out the answer while I was there. Does it refer to the country or to Sydney?

I think it comes about because they call themselves "Aussies" but they pronounce the 'SS' as a 'ZZ'... so it actually sounds like ozzie thus 'OZ'

My hospital is in metropolitan Sydney about 30 minutes from the CBD and has been looking for Emergency Dept consultants for years. It's what's called an area of unmet need and so foreign grads can enter straight into the job.
