Can a really strong upward trend replace a low gpa

Let's say someone had a rough start and ended with a low GPA freshman year but managed to get almost straight A's after that, but that first GPA was so low, the final GPA still ended up sub par, like let's say a 3.4-3.5. Do medical schools take that into consideration even with a low-ish GPA?
