California Northstate (CNUCOM)
Pros
  • MD school
  • Great match list

Cons
  • Accreditation probation
  • Private loans
  • Expensive tuition (~71K average)... this makes the private loans even more of a problem
  • Generally has a shady reputation

Touro California (TUCOM-CA)
Pros
  • Well-established, reputable DO school
  • Federal loans
  • Cheaper tuition, but not by much (~62K)

Cons
  • I'll have to take two board exams and go through OMM
  • Times will be tougher if I find I'm interested in a competitive specialty

Summary: Both are equal to me in other aspects. I guess what this comes down to is whether the private loans and risk of accreditation loss is worth the MD over DO. Hoping someone can provide more insight, especially in terms of Northstate's inner workings. They seem to be eerily private over what is actually going on, and what they are doing to remedy their issues.

See this thread, the latest posts from the past year have reported significant staff departures in key positions:

Go to Touro CA. It will not be pleasant if CNU loses accreditation and you have private loans.
