I am a 4th year medical student, and I am looking into buying books and PDA software for my sub-Is in the field that I am interested in this year. Most of the programs that I will be applying to provide either a PDA+software package or a books stipend upon matriculation into their program.

My question is whether or not I should go ahead and buy the books/software that I want and will likely use during my 4th year and residency right now or just wait 11 more months to take advantage of the goodies from whatever program I match to. Do they just cut you a check for your books stipend up front or do you have to provide a receipt of purchase before you get any money back? I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on resources that I may potentially get for "free".

Any insight or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks for reading!
