With so many super-qualified applicants for the top spots, how do programs distinguish between applicants? Is it all about scoring 260 instead of 240 on the USMLE, being AOA at Harvard instead of Columbia, research at Johns Hopkins instead of U Michigan? All of these seem ridiculous. On the other hand, interviewing is kind of ridiculous too: while being attractive and/or charismatic is great, will it really be a god indicator of how good a plastic surgeon you'll be? Do any current residents have any insights?

Being strong on paper always helps, but the two ultimate, deciding factors, are:

1. Letters of Rec: Did someone that the interviewers know and respect write a letter for you? Do they believe that the writers would try to keep you at their institution?

2. Personality: A HUGE part of matching plastics is hitting the right personality buttons with your interviewers. They want someone interesting, reliable, enthusiastic, fun, etc . . .
