I am applying to a surgical specialty and am figuring out my backup plan, which is probably to do a PGY-1 year and then apply for a PGY-2 spot in anesthesiology. Is any one PGY-1 year (Int Med vs Gen Surg vs Transitional) better than another for doing this? I'd like to do Gen Surg but would be willing to do Int Med if that would significantly increase my chances of matching into anesthesia as a PGY-2. And are any specific PGY-1 programs known for being good at placing PGY-2's in anesthesiology?
For those itching to recommend a different course of action, I already know that many programs like to hear that you would reapply in that specialty, and that you can apply to anesthesia categorically as a backup plan as well. Please limit comments to answering the specific questions. Thanks!
