Army Surgical Subs

I'm interested in a couple of the surgical subs (Optho, ENT & Ortho). Can anyone share their experience with these fields in the Army? Which are the best progams? Also, does the military use the USMLE step 1 as a screening tool like so many of the more competetive civilian programs? Thanks.
