So if I can make 90/hr for non medically related job whats the consensus here regarding whether I should work or not during medical school?

At that hourly rate you would be making over $185,000 a year if you worked full time... If this is the case I am impressed. At that point I would save that cash money to pay for medical school.

I work part time as an EMt, but I only pick up shifts when I can, plus I can study when I'm working if I'm not getting my butt handed to me. But I don't do it for the money, I do it because I like it

I've been looking at sperm banks. At the places I've looked, it is $100 per sample (CA), and you can do it up to twice a week. Plus, you can list it as a cool extracurricular on your CV.

If you're a med student with a good mcat you should be getting more than a $100 per sample. People pay thousands for sample if you have high SAT, go to Harvard, etc...

Do they pay more for MD as opposed to DO sperm?

No bro. DOs are more well rounded and more likely to be athletic and muscular compared to nerdy MDs. Chicks like muscles brah.

If you perform well enough on Step 1 and the question banks you can write for a question bank. I work for a a major COMLEX bank which pays well considering I sit at my computer and write questions during my free time...

Invest extra/scholarship money if you know how. 16x return on Ford a few years ago
And my dad was telling me over and over to invest in Ford, and I did. I sold it at 3x my money though. Imagine 16x :O

Don't think I haven't considered this one in moments of desperation. The only thing that stops me is the idea of question marks floating over the head of every child that kinda looks like me for the rest of my life.

I'm thinking you should send me a private message telling me where I can sign up. :naughty:

I substitute taught some. $75 a day. I would try to pick up days for coaches gone to tournaments. Would probably be only at the school for 3 hours or so but would get a full day rate.

I <3 this post. I have plenty of friends in med school. I did a questionaire and here are there answers: : 1.) "buy cheap (broken) xbox consoles on craigslist, fix what's wrong and resell- usually gets about $90 profit" 2.) "During summer go to garage/yard sell, buy cheap clothes, or great items and resale them- at school or online- usually get $2-3 profit per item" 3.) "During weekends Pet sit professors or community's fur children for a flat rate- usually $30 profit an hour" 4.) "Post tutor brochures at local grocery stores- usually $20/hr" 5.) MY FAVORITE OF ALL TIME "bought a peddlers license (Dirt cheap), sold cookies and brownies on the weekends at local fairs or events- Profit $200/day-------------------- Well hopefully this info helps. My friends have definitely stepped out the box to try to get some extra cash. So far so good; however, these will not make you rich and its just to help with gas and etc :soexcited:

I don't really have *plans* to work during medical school, and I certainly won't depend on any potential employment income, but I haven't entirely ruled out the possibility of picking up a few hours here and there. I imagine this would most likely be during summers and/or holiday breaks. But I'm also nontraditional, and I've been working for years in admissions at a psych hospital as a licensed mental health counselor. Since this is a master's level role with a fairly high per diem pay rate, I could theoretically earn some decent money (not nearly enough to live on, but a quite nice supplemental income) by working a handful of scattered PRN shifts when I have the time. Plus, as others have said, I enjoy this kind of work anyway, and I find helping patients very rewarding... so a few scattered shifts (i.e., one Saturday per month, or something light like that) might actually give me a nice occasional escape from the daily grind of med school. But we'll see, I'm just going to play it by ear. And of course I'll be extra cautious not to over-extend myself at first, until I have a better idea of what to expect from the demands of med school.

I've maintained some websites throughout and also maintained about 60 website hosting clients. Why give up easy money?

[Edit]: I made about $200/day this past Summer pressure washing decks. I plan to do that again this Summer... hard work but good money.

well im not completely broke, i could probably pay my own rent for a good 4 months..but its money that can burn up quickly. i guess in the big picture making a couple hundred dollars a month is meaningless when i'll be 70k debt in the end regardless.
do people ever use loan money to play in the stock market? don't flame me for this unless you actually have experience with investing...i've spent my time learning how things work and gaining experience through simulators but have never really put any big bucks on the line.

anyways, i suppose the answer is no to my original question. thanks guys

Re: stock market

I have experience investing.

Listen to this interview from 3:00 until he finishes talking about his experience investing his student loans - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhY1lQT4mgE

High risk, low rewards. Use your loan money for what it is meant to be used for.

I looked into this and they told me I had to be 18 months out from Step 3 to be considered to write for step 1 or step 2....

I used to flip stuff online and also helped sell stuff for other people and just took a cut. I won't say how much, but it was enough money that the IRS noticed and made me pay taxes on it.

I'd say that's the easiest way to go to cover expenses here and there.

I tutored 1st and 2nd year Pod, Dental, Optometry and DO students. 40 bucks an hr. 2 hrs a day. 4 days a wk for almost 2 years. Do the math. It's also a good way to score...:naughty:

Yeah, gonna do some PRN work as a physical therapist 8 hours a month so I won't have to worry about rent

Can donate plasma twice a week. I was the medical director for a site. You can get anywhere from $40-60 every time you donate. That's a$100/week just for being disease free and putting a needle in your arm.

This is a wonderful topic and I'm glad there are more people thinking about this. Despite what most think and say, there's ample time to have a part time job. Maybe not ANY part time job, but consider a job sitting at a gym or somewhere where you can basically get paid to sit there for hours on end. NEWSFLASH- you'll be sitting on your butt for hours on end anyways studying! Why not get paid for it? Check out my blog- www.makemoneyinmedschool.com
Ban hammer in 3...2...1....

Worked weekends as an Athletic Trainer (my undergrad degree) covering basketball tournaments. Paid 20/hr cash so it was a pretty good gig

I still pick up shifts as a medical technologist (making $27/HR). I limit myself to one or two weekends a month but it me great during breaks like Christmas and spring break. I'm married and have a house plus apartment located near school in another town. It definitely helps take some strain off the financial aspects plus made enough money this week to take care of Christmas presents and living expenses until second round of student loan disbursements. I don't commit to a schedule and strictly work when I want. Find a job you love and an employer who understands your situation and working a bit on the side won't be a big issue

What I cannot understand is how many people try to discourage others from working. I think its a self-esteem issue. Some don't like to hear that others are working harder than they are. People who need to make the money for one reason or another find creative ways.

I don't think it's a self-esteem issue. Med school is hard and most will discourage outside distractions, but money is a necessity. If you are in a spot where you need to make some money though, it's doable as long as you keep school first priority. The people who don't have to work or don't have to worry about finances have a leg up on you the first two years. However, medical experience and "real world" experience will shine through later on while others are adjusting-- just my opinion

It's not necessarily a student to student thing but our school won't even let us work. It's because medical school is a full time job and that's why they give us the loans that they do.

I worked 30+ hours a week out of necessity. You do what you have to do.

But they never said anything about selling other people's kidneys...

I feel like driving for Uber or something might be feasible.. The most flexible schedule you could have is working when you feel like it.

For a legit answer - most schools won't let you work on the side. We were explicitly told we would have to speak to the dean if we had anything like that in mind. Most of us just go into a ton of debt and soldier on.

Wait, why? I mean, sure, it's not ideal to work while in medical school, but if you somehow managed to get it to work without it impacting your grade, who am I as a dean to complain?

They're preemptively striking because they've seen so many people fail in the past.
