Just wondering if there are any current UCLA dental students using a Mac for their required lap top? Any one with the new Pentium processor and virtual PC?

If you are using an older mac or the new mac, what problems (if any) have you encountered?

I really want to get a mac...but I don't want to be screwed because particular dental programs don't run on it...

Thanks for the info!

I'm not attending UCLA or anything, but I do have a new MacBook Pro. It runs on Intel Core Duo processors, and is fast as hell. Anyway, to answer your question, Virtual PC is not available on Intel Mac's yet. Apple did release something called "Boot Camp", which is in beta stages right now, but will be full release on OS X Leopard. Basically, Apple has created a program to guide you step by step to running Windows XP in a dual boot configuration, and it works quite well. Also, you can check out Parallels.com, and they're offering a virtual machine solution that runs at native speeds for Windows. The new Intel Mac's is really the solution if you want to run Mac OS X and have the ability to run Windows when you do need it. Windows runs so well on these Intel Macs that gaming works flawlessly on these machines.

There are some minor issues with Boot Camp right now. For example, iSight doesn't work at this moment, and when you have a headphone plugged into the audio out port, the built in speakrs would still have sound coming out. Also, keyboard configuration is a bit messy (there is no delete key on the Mac, so you need to reprogram the keyboard somehow) and then there's the problem with the single mouse button for the trackpad (external mouse works fine though). I expect issues will be addressed before Leopard comes out, so no worries.

thanks for the info...

i really hope to get a mac...I have shared my boyfriends for the past 2 years and i love it...

UCLA requires Intel Pentium processor and Windows operating system (among other things)...so i am not too sure if a mac will do...but based on your message about the dual boot it seems that it might work. thanks again for the info

I mean the delete when using Windows. In Windows, "delete" on the MacBook behaves like backspace

You will need a Windows-based system for the clinic software. The new dual-boot MacBook Pro will work.
