i have alrerady replied you through your mailbox ,but just wanted to say i didn't find any nigerian city among the sister cities,is it that you want to establish one now?

The city of Wilmington, Delaware has created a sister city program with Osogbo, capital of Osun State in Nigeria. I have already spoken with Dr. S.O. Fadiora, Chief Medical Director, LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Osogbo. There will be a delegation visiting here in May... and I hope to visit Nigeria some time later.

I wanted to find out about medical and dental schools, the various problems (medical and dental), and preventive programs in place. I always like to have as many facts before talking with other countries. This has helped me work together and set up educational and preventive program in VietNam, Moldova, and China.

If you can be of any help, I would greatly appreciate it. I will try to answer you other email soon… haven’t opened that yet.

i would really love to be of help ,
i just graduated from the University of Benin, College of Medicine,Edo state Nigeria and want to help in seeing the standard of medical education in my country improve. The information you want is not specific as it is ,so it depends on the background information you desire. Is your sister city program the same as the new york program?

Dr.Idehen Nosakhare,
Narrow Way Clinic ,
Benin City.
Nigeria.

Hello Dr.Idehen Nosakhare,
I believe all the sister city programs are about the same. We plan a meeting with the delagation from Osun to work out the details. I hope to help them set up a dental preventive program and give some seminars on how oral health/pathology interacts with medical health. I was looking for more info on the common medical/dental problems there. Early school years(if a preventive program could be set up), and to meet, before I go some medical and dental graduates.
I wanted to try to make plans to present to our visitors so we and start programs as soon as possible... and yes I am a dreamer...

Thanks,
bob arm

hello bob,
a colleague of mine did a project on the common dental problems in Edo state,
i would correspond with him and get his findings.
Though from my own point of view the main problem is the absence of the primary dental health care system (which is very important in my environment), and should be provided by the dental hygienists, and the neglect of dental health by the majority of the masses till the tooth has to be extracted.
Is it possible that the program could be extended to involve benin city,Edo state, that would be great.

Thanks.

I agree.
I have worked on projects from the bottom up...

First with the school system: Prevention
Teach the teacher: we set up learning aids and projects for children and “teach” their class room teachers … and with sponsors from the government or industry… contests for the kids to stimulate learning (in Viet Nam it was UniLever, in China the Red Cross)

Second with the dental/medical universities
We with Health Volunteers Overs or Operation Smile, etc help to share ideas with the faculty and students, help with curriculum development… what ever they feel they want.
We help with project ideas… like the one we are doing here on prenatal patients to help the babies to be healthier.

Third with the graduate doctors:
With Continuing education projects.

I have worked with the peace corp and the partners for peace program

I would love to chat with your friend... I just got a copy of a project that started in 2003 and ends this summer on preventive dentistry... I dont recall the author ... it may have been your friend.

thanks

i have contacted him and he is even now doing his residency program at the uinversity of benin teaching hospital, he promised to get in touch with you, u did not give me a reply on if the program can be brought to benin?

thanks.

Hi
Once the program is accepted and tested in one area(as we did in Viet Nam with operation smile) in can be spread throught the country... I already have the information/program that I will share with the governor of the providence/State when they visit... Concerns as always are cultural difference, and geographic difference (like amount of fluoride in the water, etc). That is why i want to find out the most I can... I had one paper sent to me about how dental disease is a major factor in place in Nigeria... in is not on this laptop yet(I always use this but it was being repaired last 3 weeks)... Many of these facts are world wide... even in many areas of the US.

The key to any program again is to teach the teachers... and that means the local school but also the universities and local specialist and generalist.

best email for me is [email protected]

Just found a hard (paper) copy of the article... dated 2/14/06, it appears to be a newspaper review.
It states Prodessor Eyitope Ogunbodede from Obafemi Awolowo University presented to US Information Service.
The title of the article was " BAD ORAL HYGIENE CAN LEAD TO DEATH - PROF OGUNBODEDE"
he mentions a study from 7/2003 and ending this June.

when i can get the article transfered I will post it.
