my friend's daughter has it and is asking for info. I went to internet but seems like many variables.

You are correct that there are many types of hemivertebra and the approach to treatment varies. Unfortunately, most congenital scoliosis eventually needs surgery.

That being said, there is a lot of bad information out there about spine and scoliosis, so be careful. The Scoliosis Research Society is a good resource (www.srs.org)

There was a recent article in Spine that detailed this:
Mathur et. al Surfing for scoliosis: the quality of information available on the Internet. Spine. 2005 Dec 1;30(23):2695-700.

Also, I would recommend you look in a general orthopaedics textbook and read the section on Congenital Scoliosis. For example, Campbell's has 20 pages or so on congenital scoliosis and it’s a good place to start.
