hello everyone>>>>
it's interesting to see that this thread has been on for years!!

i am a nigerian medical student in my penultimate year.. i'm hoping to do my residency in the us>
please i need information on steps i can take from now to make that happen.
eg is it advisable to do the step 1 usmle now, while still in school?

is there anything else i could do?

i would really appreciate any information especially if someone has crossed from a nigerian medical school to residency in the US.

My parents are from Imo...Dad's from Mbaise. I love this thread.

I'm trying to work in Nigeria this summer (in Lagos or in Imo State, where I have people I know--I'm not trying to be ALL by myself, no sir, lol). Anybody know any contacts in Nigeria for med students?

Oh I'm NYC-based. Studied abroad in Paris for a year, so je parle le français, aussi (I saw some Togo, Cameroon, Senegal, etc in the forum--salut!)

Hi!

I would really like to work in a clinical setting in Nigeria, just to get a sense of the issues that I can get involved with. (I'm a first year medical student). Even public health-oriented internships would be nice. I don't know of any ongoing projects in research or anything, and in terms of medical subspecialties, I don't have a preference. I'm pretty much open to anything health/medically related.

Wow...it feels like just yesterday when I first posted on here about Ghanaians, Nigerians or west Africans. Well, just wanted to check and see what everyone is up to. Life on my end is not bad, can't believe I have only 2 days left to complete my orthopedic surgery residency. In 2 days, my life long dream will be fufilled. Thank God and all my family and friends who helped me along the way. For all of ya starting out in medicine...please keep you hopes up and don't be discouraged. The road is long and just as treachous as the village roads we drive on back home. But hang in there and never give up. Wish you all the best. Next time I'm on here, I will be a spine surgery fellow in Florida.

NIGERIAN.... hi guys, what do u think about training to be an interventional cardiologist in Nigeria..? thank u

Interventional cardiology is pretty new, as opposed to cardiothoracic surgery. You'll need to be in one of the big teaching hospitals.
I'll advise getting trained overseas, then coming back to use your expertise.
