As someone wrote above, there are issues with residency choice in the US. We had one Canadian, a DO student in the US, who did an audition rotation with us. No one from her school had bothered to tell her that if the residency program doesn't sponsor visas (and many don't), there is no point in applying for residency. This is even true in FM, so make no assumptions.

Anyone looking to do their residency in the US should definitely look into the visa issue. A lot of programs state they will only sponsor the J-1 for non-US citizens or permanent, while a few will sponsor the H-1B. Having said that, it's definitely worth making a phone call to a program to see if they'll sponsor the H-1B if you completed medial school in the US... even if their website states something to the contrary. I'd imagine there's usually a way to make something work.

ya, it involves the applicant paying $$ for "admin fees" for the H1B. Theres many imgs out there happy to pay.
