I'm looking at advanced data for matching Anesthesiology and it looks like it was around 50% this year. That's freaking brutal. Is that correct and if so what happened?

Gas match rate has been plummeting the past 2-3 years, likely secondary to a flight of applicants out of EM.

The advanced data tables is a little more ambiguous than Charting Outcomes. It includes folks who applied to gas as both primary and secondary specialty, making it tough to distinguish what amount of ‘Total Applicants’ should be considered when calculating total match rate.

There are also separate categories for applications/matches to PGY1 and PGY2 gas spots.
There were 500 apps / 250 matches to PGY1
There were 330 apps / 50 matches to PGY2

Assuming all the PGY2 apps also had PGY1 apps, the true match rate is closer to 60%. Maybe marginally higher if you include people who applied anesthesiology as a 2nd (or 3rd) choice speciality.

Yes you have to also include people who applied to anesthesia and matched another specialty that was their first choice ie something surgical etc
